Title: Kentucky gunmakers
Post by: Jim Chambers on October 02, 2010, 02:37:53 AM
I have located a pair of pistols signed "J&L Gilston".  The owner says the Gilstons were Lexington, KY makers.  Have any of you guys ever heard of these makers, and were they in fact from Lexington?  They appear to have been made in the early 19th century.

Jim, a call to Jerry Nobel might answer your question.  I just bought his 4 books set, and I can't believe the information that is recorded there.  I'll take the rest of m'life to digest it all if I stay at it.

Of course if you want most accurate information try Shelby Gallien whose multi-volume set of KY gunsmiths, I believe, is in press! Who knows about Sellers! Might even be correct!

Many thanks for the help, guys. I have been in contact with Shelby, and he has nothing on these makers being in Lexington.  It is possible, but so far, no documentation.  I'll pass on the info to our client, and it will be up to him to decide if he wants the pistols.
