Title: Plans for a checkering cradle
Post by: rudyc on December 17, 2014, 07:05:11 AM
Hello,

Looking for pictures or plans for a checkering cradle, been using a towel and shot bags on a table and it's not working out so well.

Thanks

Here's a nice one, has lumber dimensions below all the photos, it's a pretty involved project though & could be simplified:

that looks much like the one i have . i made min from pine , ceder and walnut though .
Im trying to recall, but i want to say  Bill Brockway had the plans in his book .
I find it works rather well when locked  down  in a vice or in my craftsman bench so I can sit behind it  with the stock angling up and away

Checkering and Gunstock carving by Monty Kennedy has lots of diagrams and instructions for what makes a good cradle.  I got my copy off Amazon for about $5. Great book with lots of checkering templates.

Rudyc:  I made my cradle from plans in "The Modern Gunsmith" by James V. Howe.  The plans are in Volume 1, chapter 2, pages 29 - 31.  Here's some pictures of mine; made from pieces of scrap maple, and other stuff I had in the shop.  I also add that at the time, I did not have a lathe.

...and here it is in use.  The beauty of this one is I can mount it in my machinist's vise that also has a swivel base, so I can hold the stock at virtually any angle.

I like the handle Taylor has on his . I am going to put one on mine,  I have two different ones. One for finishing and one for checkering. Don't pay any attention to the old man

Jerry:  are you like Mike Brookes?  Is that the Troll that lives in your shop, and comes out and works on your guns at night when you're asleep?  My two daughters call me a "basement troll".  I like your cradle.  I used my drill press to create a vertical lathe, and turned the handles for mine - one of curly maple, and the other from a broken pool cue.
