Post by: iloco on May 06, 2017, 06:17:58 PM
Anyone who has built or owns a finished Kibler Rifle Kit lets post a picture in this thread. There are a few in other threads that are hard to find.  This one thread all can post and see and keep them all in one place.

Mine is a fine shooting rifle! Very light, as it is a .45 caliber. I've shot is at least 50 times now with not a single misfire.
You did a fine job on the finish of your rifle. Looks great.

Light as a fly rod. That is the phrase I was looking for to describe mine. As well balanced as a #4 rod.

Easy off oven cleaner!  Your kidding?

Where do all these concoctions come from?
Title: Re: Kibler Rifle Pictures
Post by: sqrldog on June 06, 2017, 06:50:37 PM
If my memory is correct the primary.active ingredient in Easy Off is lye (sodium hydroxide) so it's not all that exotic of a concotion and probably something used back in the old days to stain/dye wood in particularly cherry. Believe they routinely made and used lye soap. Tim

Don't sell yourself short. Nice work and great little squirrel gun. Now do I need to pull the trigger on one to build? My problem is I would always compare to the one I got from Ric.

This is going to get me in trouble. Just checked and I'm working this year about 40 miles from his shop.

I've been drooling wanting one of Jim's kits.  My three problems, right now, are (in no particular order) 1.  What caliber to choose.  2.  $$$$.  3.  The 14" lop; mine are all 13" except for one .50 at 12.5".  "OH, the humanity"!

Aah, I can handle a 13 5/8" and even a 13 3/4".  Honestly, my only real problem is deciding what caliber.  I have a .32, .36, .40 and a treasured .45 Lancaster.  While I don't mind a second squirrel rifle, I simply worship the .45.

No one else will notice either. Good idea to wait until you have the gun apart, or do nothing. In any case AQ is not so good solution - it will rust the pins.

Actually, you do not need to remove them and it's probably better NOT to.  Just a "damp" tooth pick with the solution touched to the surface will do the trick.  "Rust them", of course that's what most products do to metal when used to "age" it.  We're not talking sloshing it on with a paint brush here!

As to noticing them, they stand out like a LED light otherwise.  They did on mine and in spite of being satisfied overall I did not care for that bright end finish showing.  If you like it don't mess with it however but the risk of "rusting the pins" is nothing to be concerned with IMO.

I disagree.  The last thing you want is for those pins to rust in place, in the wood. If too much, you may never get them out.
If ya got to cover them up, take em out and blue them.  You could also shorten them a 1/16", and no one will ever see em.

This was my first Jim Kibler kit, my first attempt at scraping, and also my first attempt at finishing something to look old. Put this one together at Jim Parkers's kit building class last month.

Never noticed them until you pointed them out to me in the pics. I probably will finish them with something when I pull them out the next time.

If they're below flush, bees wax works great as a camouflage.

It also keeps them from 'drifting' as the wood shrinks.    ;)

Ever notice how old arms always have "gradue" in the pin holes and crevices around the inlets/carving?  :o

Cheers,

Thank you, I didn't think I modified the trigger guard, I just filed it until everything was smooth and looked right to me. It now has two coats of Kibler's leaded oil finish and I just rubbed on a thin coat of tried and true traditional oil finish this morning. This rifle is a .40 caliber. This is the first small caliber that I have ever owned. Turkeys beware this fall!  All of my other rifles are early and .58, .60, and .62. This rifle is really accurate so far and uses and way less powder. Should have tried small caliber rifles years ago, they are fun to shoot. I like this one so much that I gave Jim Kibler a sugar maple stock blank at Dixons and ordered another kit in .45. This next one will have a fancier piece of wood, a nose cap, and a patchbox of some kind on it.

I really wanted it dark so I used aqua fortis on this one even though it is walnut. Some people say not to use that on walnut, but I got the look that I wanted with it.

Yes, I patterned mine from the picture of the rifle in Ivey's book from which Jim Kibler said he based his kit.  It had 3 screws in the finial instead of 2 which is sometimes seen.  I built the rifle and then sold it to someone that wanted it and had enough money to make me part with it.

Chowmi, I'd like to know your finishing schedule as well.  Beautiful!

Martin,
I went simple on this one, it was such a nice piece of wood.  I used Ye Olde Aqua Fortis from TOTW, blushed and then straight to sealer and oil finish.  So, the color is strictly from the Aqua Fortis, and a little from the oil finish.
I used about 3 or 4 coats of Permalyn Sealer, then Chamber's Traditional Oil Finish, which does have a small amount of color.  Can't remember, but it was probably between 3-5 coats of Chambers oil finish.

I really like the color it came out, and wish I had done the same on my latest rifle!

Cheers,
Norm

What do you mean by "blushed"?
Title: Re: Kibler Rifle Pictures
Post by: Chowmi on September 11, 2017, 10:45:44 PM
Martin,
By "Blushed" I mean heating the stock after applying the aqua fortis.

The heat causes a chemical reaction between the AF and the cell structure of the wood. The colors go from an ugly grey, to sometimes greenish, to brown and to red.

I used a hardware store bought heat gun to do it, hotter than a blow dryer.

Taylor,
Thank you, that means a lot to me!

Cheers,
Norm.

Went to Jim's shop today to pick up a .32 walnut stock kit. Great guy and shop. Well worth the trip (although only 35 miles for me). Got the tour, met the dogs and saw some of the hardware for the next model. Looking forward to working on it this winter when I'm home.
Title: Re: Kibler Rifle Pictures
Post by: D. Taylor Sapergia on November 24, 2017, 05:29:27 AM
Just after Jim's kits became available, I ordered one on behalf of a lovely woman who wanted to build one for herself, under my guidance.  But life intervened, she found the love of her life, got married and moved away.  I contacted her recently to determine if she intended to set some time aside to build the rifle, and in the end, I bought her out and built the rifle for myself.  this gives me three .40 cal rifles...Ha!
I had ordered a plain piece of wood to keep the cost as low as possible, but Jim asked me if I would take an upgrade on a stock he couldn't sell because of a blemish.  Naturally I agreed.   When the rifle was finished, I simply filled the two places on the forestock that had drying cracks where the whitewood met a little heartwood.  It's invisible.  And the stock is arguably the nicest figured piece of maple I have ever seen.  The curl is tight, consistent from end to end, and the wood is very hard.
I finished the rifle stock...no additions at all.

So I'll start the show with a picture of the rifle's original owner, followed with some of the rifle itself.

Post by: D. Taylor Sapergia on November 24, 2017, 07:29:12 PM
When it came time to finishing the rifle, I tried scraping, but in truth, I am very poor at it likely from lack of experience so I sanded with Norton's sandpaper.  Jim's finish is so close to being done, that I started with 180 grit and ended up at 320.  I whiskered the wood using a solution of tannic acid, drying the wood between applications gently with a heat gun, and sanding again with 320.  I repeated that process four times, and finally, no more grain was rising.  Then I applied Ferric Nitrate is a saturated solution, and it immediately turned the wood jet black - everywhere.  Now I was in a pickle...the curl was well defined, but the whole stock was black.  So I started sanding again, first with 320 - didn't make any difference, and finally back to 180 grit.  I removed all of the black to make the stock a uniform colour again, and obviously, the curl didn't change but remained very dark.  Now I finish sanded again with 320, applied Ferric Nitrate again, and blushed the stock with my heat gun.  Now the wood turned a pleasing reddish brown - mostly brown - and the curl popped!  I burnished the wood with a maroon Scotch Brite pad backed with a foam rubber pad.
I used "Circa 1850 Tung Oil" for the finish.  The can says "low lustre, hand-rubbed finish, contains pure tung oil, protects against spills".  The first two coats I applied with a brush, going over and over the wood to let it take up as much of the oil as it would, then fifteen minutes later, wiped it all off with a cloth.  I let it cure for 24 hours, and repeated, again letting it dry well over a full day and night.
Over the course of the next eight days, I applied coats of oil with a doubled cleaning patch, wetting the stock as evenly as I could, letting each coat dry for 24 hours before reapplying.  Twice I cut the finish back with 0000steel wool, going right down to the wood.  The beauty of Ferric Nitrate is you cannot remove any colour with steel wool; the edges such as lock panels being the exception, so more care is required there.  In total I applied 11 coats of oil.  Over the last three coats, I could see the oil building and increasing in shine, and exaggerating the curl.  I'm delighted with the finish, the colour and the curl.  This finish wears like iron, and is virtually water proof.  The stain and the oil are IN the wood more than ON it, so the finish lasts and lasts.
I'll have to take Daryl out to the range with me to fire the rifle...my right eye has a nasty cataract destined to go in the garbage in March, so I'll have to wait to enjoy the rifle's inherent accuracy, but I'm confident it will shine.

Wowzers!  That sure turned out great.  One of the nicest I've seen.  The color combination worked out great between the wood and metal.

I knew that was a nice piece of wood, but didn't anticipate it would be that good.  You did a great job with the stain and finish.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Jim, both for the compliments and for the wood.  I surely lucked out with that deal!!  I finished the rifle up as received...I have rifles that are fancy with carving, engraving and inlays, but wanted this one as plain as possible.  It took me two afternoons to build the rifle, two days to polish steel, and a week and a half to finish.  I'm a browning kind of guy, obviously, in this case, Laurel Mt. Forge - five applications and a damp box, three hours apart, over the course of one day.  I carded between applications with a hard roll of canvas and left it out on the bench overnight following the day in the damp box.  That always seems to allow the solution to really even out.  I killed the brown with baking soda and water, and poured boiling water over the steel.  The final thing was some motor oil on a rag, and the pleasant task of reassembling lock, triggers, and the rifle itself.
Thank you for a remarkable 'kit' in both design and accuracy.  For example, the butt plate required absolutely no inletting.  I'm thinking, since this rifle was meant for a woman, I shall give it to my older daughter for Christmas.

Wow,Taylor, home run on that finish!Truly a wonderful job.Did you fear taking to much wood down exposing metal around the inletts during all this?would you think whishering with RO water only first and perhaps one coat of tannic acid may not turn the stock totally black to require such a rub back?
Title: Re: Kibler Rifle Pictures
Post by: D. Taylor Sapergia on November 24, 2017, 11:27:46 PM
Joe:  yes on both counts!  Jim has left no wood for removal.  The edges of the lock inlet got too much attention, and so the lock is a little proud of where it should be.  Otherwise, no worse for sanding wear.

Thanks Joe:  the results were so dramatic, ie:  tannic acid followed by Ferric Nitrate, serious sanding to remove the black, and reapplying FN, that I am right now re-doing my Kuntz rifle.  After over a hundred rifles, I may have finally come upon a finishing technique that really turns me on.  All thanks to contributors from this site!!  I have several other rifles/guns that are about to get a face-lift.

I agree wholeheartedly the tannic/ ferric is the best finish I've found for making curl pop and a nice black finish (with minimal rub back) for early smoothbores
The image is a smothbore with minimal curl in the plain wood and popped with the tannic/ ferric

Title: Re: Kibler Rifle Pictures
Post by: Brent English on February 18, 2018, 07:30:05 PM
I make things for a living but it's been a while since I've done any bench work. When I saw the Kibler kits at the CLA in 2016 I ordered one on impulse.  I've had it over a year and it took me a while to warm up to working at the bench again.  Something clicked about half way through and it ended up being a fun project.

I opted for aging the metal but couldn't quite get into beating the wood up as much.  I didn't use sandpaper though, I just scraped it.  Used a light application of Laurel Mountain walnut stain to bring out the grain (I ordered better wood) and then multiple coats of their sealer alternating with vigorous steel wool rubs between coats.  So  the stock is a little rough, and that's what I intended.  Would have aged it more if I could have brought myself too it.  Still, has a little bit of an old-time look, I think.

I did a few minor embellishments, moulding lines, contoured the nose area of the stock a bit, grease hole, toe plate and man-in-the-moon inlay.  Loved the kit and the gun's lines are fantastic. My only comment is I'd like to have had a square section on the forearm to help with holding the gun in the vise.  During the build I had a few requests and Katherine really jumped in and did a great job with them.  All in all a great experience.

Hi Dave.  The gun I'm currently finishing is a Chambers Pennsylvania fowler.  I used the same technique on it, and I have done some carving around the breech tang.  I have to be careful and use discretion, but I got it done.  There has to be an easier way to employ tannic acid, without having to go back to basically, the beginning.  I just don't know what it is.

...here's the butt plate for this gun...almost finished the engraving.  My thanks to John Schippers.

Not to hijack...but, Taylor, you've built over 100 guns more than me....

This is my 1 and only this far...

(https://s20.postimg.org/6yv97six9/IMG_20161228_163617492.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/5wl2p903t/)

It has actually darkened some especially on the rubbed back areas.

I never finished a maple stock. It was recommended here that if I wanted to pop the curl and figure to scrape and use tannic acid and an acid finish.

I scraped it (never scraped a piece of wood before....). Whiskered a couple times and scraped lightly between whiskering. Then Jim's tannic acid..I didn't use a lot.  Wet the stock but wasn't WET. Then used Jim's iron nitrate.

After blushing, I used blue or maybe green scotch Brite and Chambers oil to rub it out..it didn't need hardly anything.  My "wear areas" actually started as an accident where I rubbed a little too hard...so I went with it... basically used the scotch Brite to smooth out the "crusty" dry after blushing.

Finish was Chambers oil.

First coat was soaked on heavy directly after rubbing it out... Every couple minutes I'd rub it in and add more.  Once it seemed to stop taking oil I wiped it down with a nice even light coat. After that, I finished with light coats and rubbed it out with rottenstone after a couple days of drying. There's only a few coats on it...but that first coat was nearly enough.

I burnished with a deer antler tine at one point...I think it was after the first oil coat. Not sure it did anything.

Only sharing because the color is somewhat comparable to yours.  I love the finish...The gun is an accurate bugger and has taken 2 good bucks both years I've carried it. The build was an "accident". Lol. Didn't intend to build a rifle..intended to screw furniture onto a stock that I thought was a replacement...it was less refined than any precarve I've seen since lol.

My next I think I will hit a little more with tannic acid...

Brent,

Nice job!  I like how you finished this out.  It's interesting to note that this is a piece of walnut.  At first glance you might think it's maple with the curl.

Geez Brent,
I never even thought of it being walnut the other day. Didn't get to check it out long enough. If you need to give it an aged look, give it to me for a while. I'm clumsy enough to give it a good, honest beatin' up  look. Won't charge a dime for it, either.

No courage required unless you want to add something. The machines have taken all of the fret out of assembling these things. Sand the wood slick, apply wood and metal treatment are there you go. Have at it.

Done! I narrowed the comb and brought the wrist deeper into the butt stock, added a toeplate, and cut some incised lines on the butt and forestock for a little extra bling and emphasized the lock and side plate panel a bit more.

My friend Del who owns our local bison ranch, just finished his first ever muzzle loading rifle, with my help and in my shop.  We worked every Wednesday evening including yesterday, and he took it home last night.  He ordered Jim's absolutely dead plain maple for a .40 cal rifle and this is what we got.  When we started, he said he'd like to finish it blonde...this was the compromise.  This is just straight Ferric Nitrate finished with Circa 1850 Tung Oil.  All hardware browned with LMF screws and triggers polished and blued.

I am not familiar with LMF.

Can you please tell me what it stands for?

The color is perfect.  Not too dark, still shows the stripes.

Wonderful!

Wonderful!

LMF = Laurel Mountain Forge, a brand name offering stains and finishes, including browning solution. In my experience the browning solution is the easiest to work with and gives a very nice brown.

PS: Congratulations Del! That is one good looking rifle, nice work!
