Title: Building a Brown Bess with a Swedish Barrel

Starting building a Brown Bess, Not a exakt kopi. Will use a original Swedish M 1762? cal 20mm , L-43" and lock kit and parts from TOTW and Birch stock I know the Red Coats go bananas but wat a heck ;)

It discusses my methods of refurbishing a Pedersoli Brown Bess to make it more historically accurate. The Pedersoli Bess is a rough copy of the pattern 1769 British short land musket. Your plans, lock, and hardware are for an earlier pattern 1742 British long land pattern musket. Consequently, there are key differences from the Bess I discuss but if you read the complete discussions there is a lot of good historical information about construction and design pertinent to your build. I am also embarking on a Bess build so we can share notes on the forum. I am building a militia musket that could have been carried by a militiaman from New Jersey during the early part of our war of independence. It represent an old commercially made musket based on the pattern 1742 Bess restocked locally in curly maple. Basically, I am going to build exactly the same thing you are building (except upgraded for a steel ramrod) using maple instead of birch. I'll post pictures as you do.

Post by: runastav on May 13, 2017, 07:04:58 PM: Hi Guys and thank you all! smart dog, yes I see this artikel earlier and fix my Pedersoli BB similar as you discribe thank you :)I have the nice BB book, and will try to make an early mod with wood ramrod like to have the gun as light as posible.the barrel is now innlett.

The original breach plug was much to loos, so the cure was to use a bigger tap with same TPI a 1"Withworth 8 TPI. The tang will be weld on

Great thread!! Thanks for sharing. If you are going to use a Pedersoli Bess lock on which to model the internal parts, I urge you to cut the full cock notch on the tumbler about 1.5mm closer to the half cock notch than it is on the Pedersoli. That will shorten the ridiculously long throw of the flintcock on the Pedersoli lock, speed it up a little, but more importantly, substantially reduce the chance that the sear will get caught in the halfcock notch when firing. Original Besses had very heavy trigger pulls that eliminated that problem but if you want to adjust the trigger to a much lighter pull, you may find the lock hangs up at half cock when firing. Even if it does not hang up, you may notice wear on the lip of the halfcock notch after you have fired a few dozen rounds.

Also Runastav, although the spring on the Pedersoli above is crude, note that I improved it by making sure the lower leaf of the spring is straight when the lock is at full cock rather than showing an upward bend in the middle of the leaf. I did that by pinching the main bend a little tighter and bending the lower leaf of the spring into a slight downward arc (preload). The photos below of a lock I made show what I mean. I made the mainspring from scratch and shaped it so the tension at full cock is not concentrated at the middle of lower leaf.

Hi,
I believe you could harden the frizzen either way, however, I find that when I case harden them they spark better.

If memory serves me right,6150 is a castable spring steel. This is an interesting thread to me because I have never made
a big military lock of any kind. If it were a caplock the hammer could be removed from the tumbler and then be used to lay
carpet (rugs) with ;D.
Also,as has been noticed,your ability to fabricate useful parts from whatever is laying around is most impressive.I am spoiled
to our ways and easy to obtain materials from local suppliers and free phone calls to others across the country.
Like others here,I AM impressed with your postings/tutorials and do look forward to them.Good job of that big lock.

Norm, 1/2 Norwegian nice ;)I was lucky and took a 3 place in the Norwegian Championship in Smith&Wesson R :) And have worked alitle on the BB. Use a cutoff butcap get it cheap from a buddy, and now its a building brake again. Must shoot alot before travel to east Norway and shooting Nordic Championship July 22-23-2017 (Norway, Sweden,Denmark, Finland and a Russian shooter!)

Yep, Runar actually gets things built in a timely manner. Following my progress is like watching grass grow in the summer with no measurable rain. Great looking project. I always enjoy seeing your ingenuity.

My current level of progress is calibrated by watching the crack in the plaster get longer.
I also enjoy your level of skill in making things from almost nothing.
Until 1999 I made single and double set triggers for rolling blocks and made up a 40-90
styled like a Carlos Gove or Hawken muzzle loader.

Joe.S I have lots of idea, among other things will build a cal 50 Gillespie longrifle and yes I have the book and drawing from Dennis :)Have ordered a smooth barrel from C.Burton so we can rifle here on my wooden Iowa bench.
But now I must do some gun repers etc
