Title: Cleaning patch cutter

I have a friend I shoot with, ask me to make him a tool for cutting cleaning patches. He hands me a patch, and says "this is what I would like, can you make one?"

    The cleaning patch was 2.500" in diameter, and immediately I couldn't wait to make one since I knew it be cool looking  8) I will be giving him his tool this Sunday at a shoot. I hope he will be happy with it. I made one for myself also, and am very satisfied with how it works.

Nicely done!  I love well made tools.  What type of steel did you use?  Heat treated?

Thanks Dave, The tool is made of A2 tool steel hardened, and tempered to 59 Rc. The end of the tool that is struck with a hammer is drawn back to 45 Rc. to prevent chipping if someone were to use the wrong hammer to run the tool.

Nice workmanship - and what a BIG A%% punch :o :o :o! I think I would have been a little intimidated turning that thing!

Nice punch! I have one similar I bought at dixons years ago. One thing that is nice is to add a hole at the top so you can push out the patches with a pincil. I run mine on the slowest speed In a drill press with a block of wood below. Cuts about 8 thickness slick!

I have made a couple out of old hole saw cutters. Grind the teeth off and sharpen it. Use it as Jeff described

This baby won't fit in a drill press ;D The handle end is 1.375" in diameter. I cut through 10 layers easily with a solid smack from a dead blow hammer. I know I could cut through more, but that takes away from the fun of usin' it :D  I also won't have to worry about burning the temper out of the cutting edge using a hammer.

Very impressive workmanship.

While I can understand some shooters needing a precision cleaning patch cutter.
I tend to tear mine from a piece of diaper flannel.
Or cut them with a rotary fabric cutter.
My question is: What did the chunk of A-2 cost?
MSC gets over 300 bucks for a 2x36" round.

I would love to make a couple of cutters but can't get past the material cost of large diameter tool steel.
Best I can do is 4140 end of bar cut offs from a barrel maker.

I use a drywall square and rotery cutter to cut 2" square cotton flannel cleaning patches from Wal Mart. I do cut nice shooting patches from bulk ox yoke patch materal using a cutter similar to what melsdad has shown. Not nearly as nice though. Sure like to have one in 62 size. Mine is good for up to 54 cal.

I have a few 1.500" diameter if that will work for a .62 cal. if you are interested?

If not I can make whatever size you would like.
