seeing your lathe, i am surprised you are not making the breech out of one piece of metal. either route is a fair amount of work, the snail in particular. i am just finishing up my hawken pistol build that seemed to go on for months. i really enjoy seeing people fabricate their parts.

This should be yet another great follow along project. Hope you keep us updated on your progress. :)
-
I must say that I am anxiously awaiting watching you fabricate the breech and snail. I've been drawing me up one based on the earlier style that seams to not be offered.
-
Hi and thank you guys!
Anyway how you make it of 1 piece or 2 its a LOT OF work ???But after waiting ca 2 years for this part I give up and build myself ;)

-
Runastav - you sure are good with your lath, files, "get it done" attitude and techniques when fabricating parts for a build. It is a joy to me when you post about your projects. I always learn interesting things watching your progress.
dave
-
I can see you used the through bolt method that I am considering. Did you do anything to make the bolt permanent to the snail breach?
-
You've certainly captured my interest Runar! My kind of heavy metal fun - I will watch and learn. I'm glad you are taking the time to post on this.

I am always fascinated by your posts and projects Runar. Thank you for sharing with us. Go Runar! God Bless, Marc

Runastav, always a learning experiance watching your progress.Your fabrication of parts that you cant find or would rather make is a treat to watch.

You’re a really ingenious and efficient problem-solver. Plus unafraid to take on anything. This is another great tutorial. Thanks!

There's nothing like the satisfaction that comes from success at this kind of work! And so much faster than waiting for a casting from a supplier. I'm going to be interested in how you treat the front of the snail. I'm going to resend you some images of the J & S Hawken pair...
-
...and I think I'll post it here as a reference piece. The difference is that the original J & S Hawken pistol pair have very large barrels (for pistols) with .65 cal bores.
(https://preview.ibb.co/eFreBc/2_copy.jpg) (https://ibb.co/gnRCWc)
In this image, note how the lock plate forward of the snail is rounded over, up to the barrel, and the lock panel begins about 3/8" forward of the plate. Also, the hammer rests on the nipple at an angle less than 90 deg. I assume the cup's floor is cut to match the nipple at 90 degrees.
-
Thank you all! and Taylor for infomation! The lockplate is litle longer than original, and the hammer must I cut and weld ca 5mm Shorter. The clean out hardenen screew 5mm is also Lock screew for Chamber part and snailhouse

Nice work. Is that the smaller L&R lock I told you about a couple of months ago? Now I need to go examine mine to see if my hammer is that tall.
Did Hawkens normally have a clean out screw on the off side? Would make making the breech easier.
-
Yes Clark B it is. I will build the pistol half stocked With ramrod swivel and 10" barrel lenght.

You’re a really ingenious and efficient problem-solver. Plus unafraid to take on anything. This is another great tutorial. Thanks!
Being unable to get a simple part from the USA says little for the
American suppliers. I have milled a number of these in years long
gone when helping Bill Large.
I have never seen a clean out screw on an antique but on upper
end English guns they have been found by using X ray. On the
Alex Henry breech of Don Brown's antique it was plain to see and
they were drilled all the way across and below the center line of the bore'
It appeared that the screw was probably peened, filed, polished and then
engraved with the rest of the breech. The so called "blow out plug"
was a thin platinum disc over another screw in the bolster.
These breech plugs were designed so little pressure was on the
nipple base and the platinum was only decorative.
Runar's clever system to bypass the problem proves the idea that
the fewer outside suppliers involved with such a project is better.
Keep up the good work.

Hello again Runar, your work is always very interesting. Your ability to take a lump of steel, and make it into a three dimensional rose, is amazing.
To all who watch the building of this pistol see that anything is possible, if someone made it before.
Please continue your piece and let us marvel. :)
Thank you for sharing with us your very fine work.
Best regards!

Runar, your craftsmanship is almost beyond belief. But seeing it all take place over time is totally fascinating! Thank you for sharing your work with all of us.
Saw your jeweler's saw resting there and had to chuckle. I made almost all of the steel and aluminum for two airplanes sawing the pieces from 4130 steel and various grades of aluminum. Amazing how accurate one can make a cut, and very quickly also.
Again, thanks for showing us your work.

A most excellent job, Runar. No obstacle is too great for you to overcome.
-
Coming along very nicely Runar.
If I may, I would like to see some refinement in the molding around the lock plate forward of the snail. I'm posting an image of the pistols that are the reference work for this particular build. In it you can see that there is a concave cut forward of the lock plate's bolster, and then the molding line follows more or less parallel to the edge of the plate until it rounds the forward nose and continues underneath. Notice that your molding is quite narrow along the back top edge of the plate...this should be copied along the front end of the plate as well, at least to a greater degree than you have illustrated. Make any sense?
(https://preview.ibb.co/f9BgYy/2_copy.jpg) (https://ibb.co/iiVx6J)
Also note that the lock plate forward of the snail does not have a sharp square corner at the barrel channel, but is rounded. This detail continues into the wood as well.
And finally, for now, the hammer nose is split. The purpose of this is to allow the cap to fragment and fall away after firing, rather than remain exploded into the cup of the hammer. I do that work with a hack-saw, and files, and cut right down to the floor of the cup.

Runar, I think you make a lot of us eager to go at it with hammer, chisel, and files. I thank you for the inspiration, and congratulate you on your workmanship.

Meticulous craftsmanship! Thank you very much for sharing this build.

Hi all, and thank you Craig Wilcox and stubshaft!

I think you have done a fine job in making this pistol and showing how it
is done. The checkering on the hammer is a safety feature and I won't
make a caplock without it.

Runar, I think you did an awesome weld for it being done with a stick. I've always been completely terrible with stick welding. I can do an ok job with TIG.

Hi all and thank you Bob and Clark!
The front sight made , copper base and SS blade. Now its ready for chekering of the grip(I hate chekering >:() Parts is send to Taylor for engraving :)

Bravo Runar! A most excellent pistol you're created. Hard, exacting work, I know, but you did a wonderful job throughout. Love what you have done.

You are very good with that checkering set. And lucky to have a swiveling vise when you change direction.
The only BP pistol that I have checkered was a 16+" barrel - could almost be a rifle! Be illegal if it were not BP.
The fore end was long enough to use as you would the fore end of a rifle, so I checkered it with 20 lpi, and 3-line skip. Came out pretty good. I even left big blank diamonds where the escutcheons were. The pistol was for my son, and he does indeed enjoy it.

Hi All, and thank you Craig Wilcox!
So its done, not Perfect but good for me

Nice work on the chequering Runar. It'll make a big difference in the feel of the grip.
I have the hammer, lock plate and trigger plate from Runar's pistol...will be doing a little engraving to kick it up a notch. I had eye surgery last Monday so I'm just letting the eye heal a little before putting it to the strain of engraving. Runar has been patient. Go ahead and finish the wood Runar...I'll get to the engraving this week. You got your cart ahead of the horse a bit...I always completely finish the wood prior to chequering. That keeps the chequering from filling with finish. So use a tooth brush to remove all of the finish from the chequering as you apply coats, and it should be fine.

Hi Guys! Thank you PPatch and Taylor! Stock finish Aqua fortis and Danish oil. Taylor get well soon :)

Runar sent me the lock plate, hammer and trigger plate of this build for me to do a little scratching for him. Here's the process and results, at his request.
I used blocks of wood to mount the pieces in autobody filler so they could be held securely in the engraving ball vise.

(https://preview.ibb.co/cT2SQT/100_8171.jpg) (https://ibb.co/bRKkC8)
Then, using a photograph of one of the famous J & S Hawken pistols, I engraved the parts. The trigger plate is out of my own thoughts, as no images of this part are available. I used primarily a square graver and a light hammer.

A collaboration between two artists of the first order is always a joy to behold.
-
I have been following this remarkable build.
Taylor "scratchin'" just adds to the already superb workmanship.
Well done to both of you.
-
A feature of the Hawken engraving is its simplicity. Yet it adds to the charm of the piece. After reading Schippers, it was tough not to go crazy. I'm happy you like it Runar. I have it wrapped and will get it to the post asap.
Thanks too everyone, for your kind words.

Wow,how cool is it to have two craftsman an ocean away make a pistol all it can be,tip of the 'ol cap to you two, well done sirs.
-
This is turning out to be a very special pistol indeed. Collaboration projects are the very best.
-
Wow! That engraving is really the icing on the cake! :)
-
Hi Guys! and thank you all!So now I must have patience to parts arrive Norway and the pistol can be completed :)

Beautiful work Runar. I think with your talent you will be able to do beautiful engraving with practice. Taylor, that is indeed some elegantly simple engraving. Nice collaboration.
Regarding finishing checkering, my dad used a similar method. He used painters tape over the checkering area when adding the finish after staining (he checkered before finish and stain). After the main finish went on, he'd remove the tape, and place one drop of finish in the center of the checkering. He scrub that one drop every which way with a soft toothbrush. If it wasn't enough, he'd add another drop and repeat. He always preached to me not to use more than a drop at a time, lest one "Goop up the checkering." His always looked beautiful, and I have successfully done some modern handgun grips that way.
God Bless, Marc

That's jus amazing that somebody can take hunk of steel and turn it into something beautiful.

Jezz Taylor, even your stir stick is Curley :) Beautifully done.

Hi Taylor,
It is really easy to go wild with engraving when you have mastered much of it and want to express your designs and skills. However, the true professional matches his work with his objectives, which you have done here extraordinarily well. When I look at this work, I am not dazzled by complexity and flourish, which has its place, but the merging of the artist with historical context. You succeeded in that in spades, Taylor. Runastav created a wonderful canvas and you decorated it just right.

Runar,
I have waited with a reply until you finished your pistol.
It is always nice to get your work back, engraved and hold it in your own hands.
I keep your post, it is a good example, may be I make your pistol later on scale.
Very great job!
Adrie

Big congrats to both of you! The combination has produced a beautiful piece of artwork indeed!
-
Runar: your pistol looks great assembled. I'm pleased that you didn't blue or brown the steel. That would really diminish the effect of the engraving.
-
Very nice job!! Thanks for taking us along! Nate

I have referred to this thread frequently these past years to model some of the techniques shown.
A skillset that is hard to find these days has been depicted here and deserves to be recognized.
Thank you for this valuable source of visual aid.
