This plane is based on the old wooden planes of yesteryear. I use it to cut the dovetails on the wooden patchbox lids. Shown in the first picture is the plane in action, cutting the dovetails on a scrap. The beauty of this tool is that you can fit the lid to your box opening, one shaving at a time.

The depth of the dovetail is controlled here, by sliding the fence up or down on the body of the plane.

The 'bit' is a piece of )-1 tool steel, filed to shape, then hardened.

Really neat. I take it the plane is stationary and the lid is slid along the plane.

Precisely. I hold the plane in the vise, and slide the patchbox lid over the plane. Be extremely careful not to have your fingers hang over the edge of the lid where the cutter can bite you. I am OK so far. My plane is not all bloodstained.

Acer -- Thanks for the PDF. I downloaded it and will have my new project done in a week or so (it could take up to a year or longer around here). Oh, and since I can't make it to Dixon's to see it in the flesh, could you please send it to my address? I'll have it back to you in a week or so----. lol :o ;D
