SO,, I'm new to this and could use some veteran advice. Black powder seems to be available only in cases of 25 1-lb containers. That is a sizeable commitment. Is it possible to buy only one or two 1-lb cans?
-
Most wholesale outlets require that kind of commitment.
Get a couple friends together.

Powder INC sells smaller quantities no problem to your door ,however you still pay a little more for hazmat/shipping . Buy the case and those costs are included /gone ! Ed

In my neck of the woods, there is no place that sells black powder. As a result, the local ML club will collect orders until they get to 25 pounds, and then split the cost: powder plus shipping plus hazmat fee divided by 25 equals price per pound for that order.
-
Grafs & Sons will sell smaller quantities also

Powder valley as well....

The Maine Powder House sells BP in a minimum of 5#. You have to pay the Hazardous shipping costs which puts the price per pound up. If you order 25#, the hazardous shipping fee is free, and at current prices comes to about $18 per pound. Get some fellow BP shooters to go in on a 25# order.

Buffalo Arms will ship 5 pound lots. The hazmat fee is about $55.

What a ripoff. Graf's charges $20 for hazmat and i've seen it sometimes for $10.
-
My advice on buying powder: buy as much as you can afford! It will never be this inexpensive again. Stock pile as much as is legal.

Errata: it seems that the total shipping was $55. The hazmat fee was $33.
-
That's still high. Graf's shipping is $7.95

if yer really into all manner of trad bp guns, bulk mail order is the way to go. order out 25# and be done with it. that lasts me a year as i use a LOT for bpcr so i'll order 25# of swiss, with a mix of 1-1/2f and 3f. if you only use 10# or less per year, seek out locals (friends, clubs, ads in local town papers, etc) that will mail order with ya. start doing the seeking well before ya run out of powder.

We are paying $115 to $130AU for a kilo (two pounds roughly of powder) here in Western Australia. Many years ago we had a black powder drought in South Australia, I bough two cases of goex FFg on a primary producers certificate and paid $11 a pound tin, normal retail was about $25 !! Buy as much powder as you can afford. It has stood me in good stead for a long time.

I order from them. Cheaper than local - even with the fees. Easy to deal with. I buy as many as I can afford at the time. Lowers the fee per lbs.
