Robby, that jaeger bag is beautiful. Is the flap embroidered, inked, dyed? Well done sir! God Bless, Marc
-
Thank you Marc. It is painted on canvas, varnished, and laminated to tanned buckskin.
Robby
-
Very classy look, appropriate to a jaeger. With that finishing, I’ll bet it will look nice when used and worn over time.

8) 8) 8)... my "everyday" shooting gear,... horn is known to be 150+ years old, going back at least four generations of my family in east Tennessee,... bag is about 8"x 7" braintanned buckskin lined with heavy linen cloth,... simple east Tennessee Smoky Mountain style,....

Robby,
You are doing some very nice leather work. Leather work to be proud of for sure.
I particularly like the bag in the top photo. Do you have a pattern you could share?
-
Tim, I don't know how I would share it. I see a bag style I like and draw it out on paper, cut it out, tape it together and maybe tweak it around a bit, disassemble it and trace the parts out on the leather and start stitching. The book by T.C. Albert has been a great help in understanding how to work with leather. I think Ron Scot posted a picture of a bag he made with a painted flap, that was the inspiration for mine.
(https://preview.ibb.co/coqYjK/IMG_0039.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ia4tjK)
Sometimes I just go with the amalgam of pictures I've seen and just start drawing.
Thank you.

I love Curt Lyles’ work. Just looks “rugged and back-woodsy”.
Just like Curt ;D He's a good man, love to talk to him.
He once told me that his favorite food was fried squirrel, he said he and his wife shared a squirrel for dinner (lunch) about 3 days a week. I told him he must not be a big eater to only have 1/2 a squirrel. Then he explained how big their Fox squirrels were.

That Jaeger bag gives me all kinds of interesting ideas, like a family coat of arms, or the family tartan, or a map of Ohio or England. Maybe the Coat of Arms with a strap faced with the tartan. So many possibilities!

My double pouch bag for my 20 gauge smoothbore
(https://preview.ibb.co/bBqszK/20140126_145627.jpg) (https://ibb.co/jdNi6z)
This bag and strap was made by the Weaving Welshman. It's unlined, made of leather with the strap having been treated with beeswax, it goes with my TVM early Virginia rifle.
(https://preview.ibb.co/njUKeK/EV_rifle_and_accoutrements.jpg) (https://ibb.co/icZVmz)
This is the first bag I ever bought, made by a local leather company. It isn't period correct but it is so stoutly made that it will probably outlive my grand niece. This picture includes my cherry stocked Trade Rifle and Buffalo powder horn.

Beautiful bags Guys
-
Hanshi, I really like the light colored bag with the beadwork and woven strap. I've wanted a bag like that for many years, just haven't put in the effort to get one.
-
I agree with Mr. Pierce. The craftsmanship is stunning.
-
I started this so I guess I should post something. This bag is plus 30 years old. It started life as a shoulder bag and worked quite well at that. During one of my "lets try something else" periods I decided to make it into a belt bag. It worked/works well both ways.
It is a divided bag with a small ball pocket at the back of the interior. I love this bag and it has been through He[[ with me. Sticking with my love of plain and functional....... but good to look at.

This is my first attempt at a bag. I’ve already removed the flap because I didn’t like the fit. Thanks Marc for letting me attempt to copy one of your bags. I have 3 others in the works out of TC Alberts book. This hobby seems more addictive than guns because you can buy the materials at a lower cost.

Darkhorse, I was hesitant with posting those bags as I didn't want to sully a fine thread showing off amazing artwork. Thanks for the kind words but I get by simply by telling others that my 10 year old grandson made them for a history class project.
-
It is truly amazing at the craftsman and their artful workmanship on this forum. I like all these bags. I would love to see more bags that would look at home in the Tennessee mountains of old. Love those Tennessee Mountain rifles!
God Bless

Doug, this is as close to a Appalachian mountain bag as I have done (hair-on calf hide). After seeing all of the other bags posted here, I am leery to put my work on display by comparison. God Bless, Marc

All of these bags are well done and remarkable! Robby, yours especially catches my eye based on its simplicity and looks. Of course, it doesn't hurt either that it is with a nice SMR and left handed at that.😎
-
Marc and Robby thanks for posting your bags.
Marc your work fits right in there with the rest. I like your bag and the workmanship is tops.
Robby I like your bag also. It looks great with that fine looking left handed SMR. I just recently started making parts for a left handed Tenn. Mtn. rifle for one of my grandsons who is left handed.
God Bless

I'll share my three rigs. In the first picture, the set on top is a bearded bag with horn and accouterments by T. C. Albert. The lower bag is by Darrell Lang with a sun-rise motif tooled in. The horn I bought from Dixon's in PA. I have the horn maker's name somewhere but unfortunately I seem to have misplaced it.

When i was still shooting (arthritis has made me more of a collector now), the below set was my go-to, everyday gear. It is a double bag with a simple horn. They were very inexpensive and I bought them both years ago, but separately, from that go-to accessory store Ebay.

Really nice smaller bag. I love it........

Thanks for the kind words, fellers. I’m primarily a hunter/backyard shooter, so I don’t carry a lot...a small bullet board, a starter, a wallet with extra flints/leathers/turnscrew/jag, and a piece of waxed canvas to cover the lock in case it rains. I load and prime from the same horn...less bother that way. This pouch will be plenty roomy for my use. Now if I was shooting trail walks, it might be a different story!

That is fine looking work Greg. I like the fine features on that double pounch. Nice color too. Best wishes, and God Bless, Marc

Wow, everything is absolutely beautiful, the creativity is incredible. From simplicity to complex bags.

James Roberts:
you should be total ashamed of yourself.
Those bags are stunning.
I like working with leather, but you are a master. If you taught a class I would have to give some serious consideration.
I have always admired your work sir.

I view James Rogers work like a guitarist views Eric Clapton at a concert. Either you are highly inspired and motivated to get better, or you are totally demoralized. :-D So far, I am trying to stay on the side of inspired. Go James! God Bless, Marc

Here a a couple nice bags and horns. I haven't gotten them set up yet but they will definitely be in the woods this Fall Lord willing. Both bags are made by forum member scottmc. I think he does great work. The light colored bag is a copy of an original out of Unicoi, TN and the nice little horn with a squirrel hide repair on the butt end. The other dark bag is accompanied by a neat little original horn.

Here is one I just about have finished. All leather work is calf skin by me. A bit more sewing has been done. Horn is by Art DeCamp and strap by Kris P. I am waiting on a patch knife and brush and pick..... Should be finished this week

Monty that Allen Martin rifle gun, Art DeCamp horn and your homemade bag work well together. 👍🏻

Here’s a small (6 1/2” wide by 7” deep) double pouch that I just finished up. Veg tanned cowhide, hand-woven strap, cordovan Fiebing’s dye, brass buckle on the adjustment strap, handmade brass rings for the strap-bag connection.

Beautifully done Mr. Pennel. “Picnicking,Mr. Pennel!?” Sorry, couldn’t help but think of Capt Nathan Brittles. Looks like spring has sprung in your part of the woods, Mr Pennel.

Monty, that is a tastefully done bag for sure. God Bless, Marc

I like to have a separate bag and horn for each rifle, or at least calibre, but a separate bag is the only important thing. I can use my 3Fg horn(s) for a variety of rifles, and similarly with the 2Fg horn(s). I also have several priming horns that I carry on cords around m' neck.
So here are a few of my favourites...

The bag above I purchased from a member of this forum several years ago. It is my .50 cal bag. It has a lined flap, a hanging pouch for balls on the inside back, two compartments and a pouch under the flap. I like these features as it organizes my stuff, and I keep the same theme with most of my bags.

These three images are of the same bag. It is my Hawken bag. It and several others of my bags are made from some great leather I bought from one of our members several years ago, and I still have some left over. It too has inside and outside pouches and compartments. It is accompanied by a large horn that will take a full pound of powder.

These images are of my .40 cal bag. I have three rifles in that calibre, so it gets a lot of use, as you can see. It is made of brain tanned moose hide, lined with canvas, and edged with brain tanned deer skin.

And last is my smoothbore bag. It services my Chambers' Penn fowler 20 gauge, mostly with patched round ball. It's made of canvas lined with denim patch material, per TC Albert's great article in Muzzlelaoder mag a couple years ago. I made my haversack using the same design, but bigger. It is a double bag.

Hello everybody, here a few bag's I have made in last years. The powder horn's made by Scott Sibley and Art DeCamp. Sometimes I made also patch knives/small screwdrivers and powder measures by myself.
