I started on a new project. This one is a Tennessee rifle. It is being built from a plank and using plans from Track of the Wolf. Just for for fun, I am making a series of videos of building it. I am explaining what I am doing every step along the way. Hopefully it will be helpful to those of you who are new to this or thinking about giving it a try. I am not a gun building expert so don't think of this as the right way or the best way to do things. It is just me building a gun and talking too much. I don't have any schedule on when the videos will be coming out. The gun is not finished yet so I will post new videos to You Tube as I get them done. I am anxious for hear any comments that you might have.
Here is Part 1. Showing all the parts, explaining what they and how they go together, and getting started.

I like the approach and always watch these rifle builds when I find them. I'm sure a Tennessee rifle will get a lot of views. I look forward to seeing more. Thanks.

Nice! I would rather watch you build and ramble on about muzzleloaders then watch any $#@* they put on tv!

Building a gun is more fun than watching someone else do it.

I agree. Except for polishing the steel parts lol

Bill, you might try a bit less inletting black. I use an old toothbrush, barely touch it to the stuff in the little vial, and brush off most on a piece of paper toweling. You just need a bare trace on the corners of the item being inletted. Easy to see against the white maple wood. That stuff is almost "evil" the way it gets all over everything.
Been admiring your work, and your improving use of your tools (and brain!). You are really doing some nice work, and that Tennessee rifle is going to be super nice!
-
I did cut back on the inletting black. First gun used almost half a jar of the stuff!

I agree. Steel polishing is coming soon. Time to buy a belt sander.

Great videos Bill...keep em coming!

Great video's Bill. I am enjoying them. I noticed in the 1st one you dropped the barrel, Good thing you had your clear toed safety sandals on!!! ;) ;D 8)

Glad to hear that you like them. I will probably do some editing tonight. That is not nearly as much fun as the building.

It sure would be nice to have a mill. I always end up doing everything the hard way, including the easy stuff.

The mill is not a magical make everything easy machine! A 5 minute cut might have a 90 minute setup. The milling machine ends up being the cheap part. Tooling is expensive. It is nice to have. Thing to remember is that using a mill requires additional skills. Not fewer. Milling machines do not make small mistakes.

milling machine? no I was thinking why don't you use a plane with a toothed blade.

Bill, to the old hands on here this may be old hat, but to a newbie like me it's fascinating. Thanks for sharing these.
Is there a website where I can see some of your completed work?

Glad that you like it! Just remember that I am no expert at this. I am just building a gun while talking to myself the whole time with a camera on. But I hope that it helps a bit. Sorry. No finished guns on internet.

This is my first post as a newbie to ALR and I just want to say that Bill’s video series on this rifle and the Tulle have inspired me to finally dive in and attempt a build like this. The Tennessee Mountain Rifle has long been a favorite style for me and the more “Poor Boy” the better. This forum has also led me to other sources of info and building knowledge and I’m currently caught up in the absorption and tool accumulating stage of making this dream of mine turn into reality. A Cherry stock blank is now in my possession and setting up my bench is in progress. Can’t wait to see your rifle come together and I’ll contunue to rewatch the entire series. Thank you for your generous sharing, it’s unlocked many of the mysteries of constructing a beautiful longrifle.

I'm glad to hear that it is helpful. The biggest trick to building guns is to go slow and think everything through before cutting anything.

Do you find the CA glue affects the ability of the finish to penetrate the wood? I would think you'd get a lighter spot...
-
I have not really had any trouble with that. Obviously stain will not penetrate the seam. If the wood that you glue is a tight fit you just get a thin line that is not likely to be ever noticed against the grain or the curl. Problem that i have is that the glue tends spread out a bit on the surface. That won't stain. But it does not penetrate very deep in the wood and can be sanded away fairly easily.
