Hi All! I will try to build a Gillespie Rifle . Barrel 45" long slight swamped cal 50 from Charles Burton and rifled on my Iowa rifling bench. Stock from Blackthorn, L&R Durs Egg Lock, set trigger from davis? BC and TG from Dennis Glazener and his Nice book :)

Looking forward to watching this build. Runar thanks and keep us posted.

I second that, looking forward to this build. I always enjoy your builds and always learn a lot about how to improvise. This will be good, no doubt.

-
Nice parts. I've got a couple of those Durr's Egg locks - work well for me. One needed the frizzen re-hardened and tempered - no it's an incredible sparker.
-
The very first Gillespie that I built I used a Durs Egg lock. Rounded the tail to make it look more like later Goulcher locks but it probably would have looked better if I had left it as it came. That was a good lock far better than the other L & R locks that I have used since then. Made the stock out of Black Maple, which I had never hear of until Fred Miller sold me that piece. Good hard piece of Maple.

runastav,
What are you going to use for stock wood? I have not heard of Blackthorn except for use in make Swiss black powder?
Thanks!
Looking forward to the progress pictures and story! ;D
-
Runastav,
After seeing the work you did on your previous projects, I am looking forward to see your skills applied to a SMR.
Keep us posted please.
God Bless
Doug

Runar, you always do such nice, precise work, and I am anxious to follow your progress.
Keep those pictures and words coming!
Did you find a strong sub-teenager to pull the rifling apparatus?
-
Hi All and thank you! ScottH, sorry my bad English the Wood is European ALDER ;) Craig Wilcox, yes my youngest teenager son Martin well hes 31. So the Stock is out of the plank, and the barrelinlet is started. I use cheap patent ties? as a guide work vell for me this Wood is wery loose in fibers.

Hei Runar - good idea with your "patent ties", it would seem to be great as you can slightly force it in or out to accommodate a swamped barrel. Probably easier with that wide plank that you have. Do you drill the screw holes so as to not crack the wood?
You've made a good start! Be sure to thank Martin, maybe give him a cup of coffee as a reward.
Hmmmm. Me learning Norwegian while in my 70's!

Hi All! Craig Wilcox, no I dont drill first the screws is very thin/small. You Learning Norwegian nice :)

Nice. Is that a hardened screw that the file won't bite into?
The Gillespie shop was located about ten or fifteen miles from where I live now, so Gillespie rifles are extra interesting.
-
A lot to be learned from this project. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
Why is there grass growing in your shop? :)

Mill's River, Dennis. I live in Fletcher, about four miles south of the airport.
Mathew and his wife are buried in the Sitton/Gillespie cemetery that overlooks where his shop was right beside his father-in-law, Philip Sitton's iron works. Several other Gillespie gun makers are buried there, Harvey and his first cousin/brother-in-law John Harvey Gillespie and maybe another one, can't remember.
Old man John's gun mill was over near East Fork Baptist Church he and son William are buried in the family cemetery overlooking the East Fork River.

Coming along nicely indeed! And I see you penciled in the missing screw.
Yesterday was our "Thanksgiving Day", which dates back to the 17th century. Do you have such a day in Norway? It is giving thanks for all the good things in our life, and traditionally we bake a turkey. We had about 30-35 people at my daughter's house, lots of grand children and great grand children for me to play around with.
-
Hi all, and thank you Craig Wilcox! No we dont have this day here in Norway, but we have taken after you the Black Friday today! The wife been out all day shopping phhuuu. Yes you right missing setscrew, but one more impoten part is the missing bit on the front trigger for just this screw ;)So I have to make a new front trigger when we discover it.

Now Runar, you know how much you love to tinker with things like this set trigger system. So you get to have a wee bit more fun making another trigger. If you hated doing the work, you would have stuck in a Davis trigger already made!
I do get a kick out of seeing you "cut" the piece out with your 1/16" drill bit. If you are a bit ham-handed (clumsy) like me, you must buy them by the dozen!
Be good, and perhaps Sinter Klaus will come visit!!
-
Hi Guys! and thank you Craig Wilcox! Lotts of filing on that triggers, I use a broken RB mainspring for the master spring and cut from a clock spring (Thank you Norleif) for the front trigger.Folks, when inlett how long from the sear will you have the front trigger on this set trigger?

Hi Runar,
<<<very litle Place for triggerfinger
Runar>>>
I was told by an oldtimer that the front trigger was pressed on the side of the trigger with the tip of the finger to release it. I am guessing that this actually meant sideways and rearward pressure with the finger tip (45 degree angle pressure?). With that motion, you wouldn't need much room in the trigger guard. I don't press the trigger that way, but I do release the front trigger with just the tip of my index finger. Not much pressure is needed.
Great job on the triggers! God Bless, and best wishes, Marc
-
Runar,
Sorry I misunderstood your question about finger room. Marcruger is correct about the front trigger. Its my understanding that these rifles were made that way to keep a person from jerking the front trigger. The are meant to be fired by the side of the index finger. I have seen them where you could not physically get you finger through the guard due to closeness of the front trigger to the trigger guard bow. Try firing it with the side of your index finger tip.

Interesting, Dennis. That is how I operate the set trigger on my .36 cal. rat rifle.
It is so finely set, one must be VERY careful.

Runar,
Looks like you have done a fine job on this rifle. The drawing you used was made from an original rifle by Harvey Gillespie Harvey used grease holes on some rifles and not on others so you might consider adding an oval grease hole. One thing we did not discuss is the unique stamps most of the Gillespies used in their barrels. If interested in these let me know and I will send photos.

Coming along nicely, Runar. I was surprised that you wrote the heel drop in inches, instead of millimeters! 88.9 mm, I think!
Really liking your attention to detail - and Dennis is a great advisor for you.

You are really doing a first-class job on that rifle. Maybe you emigrate here like the German gunsmiths in the 17th and 18th centuries?
And our state of Minnesota has a LOT of Scandinavian people - Ollie and Sven jokes are always popping up. Nice and cold, lots of snow there.
-
Hi all! Thank you Craig Wilcox! Emigrate me? no I must see the North Sea Horizon every day ;) So the front sight is made.

Runar, its looks great, very well done. Your metal work, especially the trigger fabrication has inspired me to attempt such things.
