I received an Email from Ms. Katherine today letting me know My SMR kit is on its way.
I was able to get my stock in Extra Fancy maple. My plan is to use the tannic acid, iron nitrate and permalyn sealer on the maple. Still undecided on what finish for the barrel and hardware.
The blued finishes look great but so does a good browning job.

here is one with a fancy maple stock - with browned furniture and barrel.
It is rather plain, but quite nice. Shoots nicely, too.

Lot of great options!!! - Daryl has a fantastic finished rifle, some others like them a little lighter.. or even much darker...

You guys built 2 good looking rifles. That maple is hard to beat when it comes to a
Flintlock Rifle stock. Decisions Decisions.

Wow! That is a beauty. One of my favorites I've seen. Wish I had a lot more wood like that.

Jim, You sure know how to pick out good looking wood!
Can’t wait to see my rifle when it gets here.
Please tell Katherine thanks for being so nice and helpful to me.
She may be getting tired of my emails by now.

Daryl,
If you don't mind my asking. What steps/products did you use to finish your rifle. I have a gun kit coming and would like to know how you finished your stock , the way the grain pops out and that finish is beautiful.
-
I used Chambers Gun Oil over Kibler's tannic acid and blushed iron nitrate. The surface had to be rubbed back with Scotchbrite. I really like the results on curly maple.
-
Daryl,
Just to critique you a little, there is nothing PLAIN about that rifle!! It is drop dead gorgeous!!

Thanks for the info Dave.

Stumbler- I think Taylor, who built this rifle and finished it, use aqua-fortis, blushed with heat. Taylor used Tung Oil, I think, for the finish. Worked out nicely.
The stock was one Jim sent him that had some problems that would not allow sale to 'just anyone', but he figured Taylor could work them out
- he did and the problems became invisible.
Doc - by plain, I meant inlays, carving, etc. He did do a credible job on it, for an Romanian/Scot. ;D

Good to hear Tim! Still waiting to hear about mine, shouldnt be too much longer now. What options did you order with yours?

I ordered the basic kit in .45 with the extra fancy maple.
Thought about adding a simple inlay, maybe a man in the moon
Or something similar. Maybe a toe plate if I get the nerve to try it.

I went with .36 cal, extra fancy maple as well. I also am going to add a toeplate. Im on the fence about a patchbox...almost seems a shame to cover up such pretty wood...will decide later. If I do, most likely would go with a simple Bean style patchbox.

Do you plan to make your toe plate from scratch or buy one? Chances are good I will not add a patch box because it does require removing that pretty wood.
-
I put a toe plate on mine and was going to put a banana patch box on it but the rifle had some nice wood that I thought would look better than a patch box.

That’s a good looking rifle. Don’t blame you for not wanting to
Cut out that pretty wood. What thickness steel did you use for the toe
Plate?

I have a toeplate that i ordered from TOW...not sure i care for it as it is a stamped part so the corners have a pretty heavy radius on one side. To get rid of the radius would take away about half the thickness of the part.

We have the same train of thought there, nice looking rifle, well done!
-
You can cut a toe plate out your self from a piece of sheet steel. What you buy precut is going to be too big anyway. No fancy finial needed, straight across is fine. I use about 1/16" stock.
-
Eric- is that walnut or cherry? Sure is a pretty colour and flame in the butt.
-
Walnut, the wood is actually a good bit darker than the sunlight and fill flash would suggest.
I bought a toeplate from Track and cut it down to fit, it does have a finial on it but I added it and the moldings for a little more bling on the rifle. I also reshaped the comb, wrist and lock panels to make everything sleeker.
-
Hey Tim, any pics to show off on the SMR yet?
-
No pics yet. I haven’t had time to start working on it but hopefully
Soon. Honey Do jobs and other stuff keeping me busy.
