Title: Gun stock vise sale
Post by: deepcreekdale on December 29, 2018, 05:05:32 PM
Woodcraft has the gunstockers/woodcarving vise on sale for $99. It usually goes for around $150 both in their catalog and on Ebay/Amazon. If you have been thinking about getting this excellent vise, might be a good time to grab one or two. (I have 2 and couldn't live without them.)

The vise has been referred to as "A Third Hand".I have no gunstockers vise
but do have a fine 4" bench vise I bought from MSC in 1976,made in Poland
and it has a REAR jaw that slides on a dovetail with adjustable gibbs.I got it
from MSC for sending a check for $25 which included shipping.THAT was the
best $25 I ever INVESTED and no reason to think otherwise.

It doesn't seem to be on sale.

Can you post the link to the vise you saw on sale?  Thanks.

I've generally used a Parrot vice which lets me tilt and rotate. I bought it new in the early 90's. I made soft jaws for it years ago. The vice tilts and rotates, but the jaws do now swivel like the pattern maker's vise that's on sale. The patternmaker's vice doesn't tilt. Those who have used both, what do you think of the patternmaker's for gunstocking?

Thanks,
Gerald

Anybody else get a messed-up order?  Mine came without the base and turnscrew.  Customer support says, "Sorry, they're back-ordered until February".

I just bought a patternmakers vise from Woodcraft and used it while finishing up a halfstock and am currently using it on a longrifle. I had previously used the Parrot vise for many years. The best thing about the Parrot was the tilting feature. That came in handy at times. I really like the PM vise though. The swivel jaws are really great for holding a stock without having to shim like I did with the Parrot. Plus, the PM is just a more substantial vise. I think I can live without the tilt feature.

I decided I would bite on the Woodcraft deal myself and received mine about a week or so ago.  But the base in their picture is a casting, and the one I got was a stamping.  However, after using it for a week, the stamped base seems to be perfectly adequate, and I am really liking this vise.  I too was using a Parrot vise before this, but the cheap jaw screw stripped on me about 3 weeks ago, so this is what led me to buy the PM vise.  It is much, much more heavy-duty than the Parrot vise, and the fact that it comes with padded wooden jaws is a plus for me.

As far as backordered parts, that is an Acme thread on the mounting screw, so hard to improvise something to get it set up temporarily, but not impossible.  I was fortunate mine came complete.

I guess I better open the box and see what's up with mine, got it a couple weeks ago.

Mine came with all required parts. I just mounted it yesterday and I believe it will be a good addition.

I decided to add a second vise to my bench and like the vise Woodcraft has on sale; I've had one of those for a number of years.  I was a little leery of ordering one when I read some of you had parts missing and back ordered when you got them.  The Orlando store (about 70 miles away) had one in stock so I drove over there this morning and bought it.  One of the guys behind the counter said they never sell those things unless they're on sale then they go pretty fast.  I didn't bother to ask him if that wasn't a clue the regular price is a little too high.   ;)

Anyway, I wanted to pass on that Woodcraft has a 10% discount for military and military veterans on all items not on sale; I was not aware of that.  It didn't help on the vise since it was on sale but it did apply to the very pricey can of Briwax I bought.  I know many here on the forum are military or vets, so if you're near a Woodcraft store, remember to ask for the 10% discount if you shop there.
