Title: A Soddy followed me home!
Post by: 1sogdusm on January 28, 2019, 08:05:20 PM
I stumbled on a Soddy rifle the other day and thought I would share a few photos. This one is around .50 caliber , not a chunk but certainly not a light weight either.

Well, I for one am jealous of your nice find. You don't list the barrel length, but there is no reason that it couldn't have been in some chunk shoots: people used to bring what they had.
Unusual that it doesn't have double set triggers, I take it that the single trigger that we see is a simple trigger.
The stock seems to end about 4 inches back from the muzzle. Does this look original, or was it modified at some point?
Anyway, lots to like about your "new" rifle.

:o :o :o.... yessir, all the features you want to see in a Soddy,...  most likely a match rifle,..not all were really long barrels,... 44" -50" were common,... you did well on this one,.. is the nosecap poured pewter ?? ... if so, I would wager she has been shortened,..... regards,... CCF,...

Thanks for the kind words, nose cap is brass not pewter. I think it was shortened at some point but not sure. Not home now, seems like barrel is 44”.  The single trigger is light for sure, barrel shows that handled a lot smoothness of an old one. I kind of love it, just salty enough to be honest.

Actually looks like a third dovetail just to the rear of the front sight...could it have been a triple dovetail sight originally?

Nice rifle, congratulations...respectfully I'm envious, perhaps one will find its way to me someday so I can check that off my list.
