Thanks for posting, T.C.  I have enjoyed your articles about German game bags in Muzzleloader magazine.

Coincidentally, I recently finished reading Wild Sports in the Far West, by Frederick Gerstaecker.  The author was a young German adventurer and sportsman who came to America in the late 1830's and stayed for about four years.  Most of that time was spent in Arkansas, but he did pass through Illinois.  He mentions his game bag frequently.

The entire book is available online, for free.  Google the author and title and you should find it.

Best regards,

Notchy Bob

That is a Beauty Bud, I would probably be afraid to use it. And if I did have it I would have to make a horn to go with it followed by a gun of some sort, we know how that goes.

Thanks for all the kind words.
Tim, a Paul Bunyan sized horn might
Go pretty well with it. The bag is really
Pretty huge . It’s a foot across at the top
And gets even wider from there
Plenty of room for snacks I would guess?

My kind of bag, big enough to hold lunch.

I particularly like your treatment of the two outer pockets and buttons. Is your strap linen?  I can imagine the number of hours you put into the bag. Very nice!

I believe Gerstaecker reported carrying provisions in his game bag, and he also described putting his feet in his game bag to keep them warm, when he was unexpectedly forced to bivouac one bitter cold night.  Must have been a pretty big bag, to hold both feet and keep them covered.

Very nice. That is my preferred arrangement for a Germanic bag.

I don't know if it's unique or not, but it's gorgeous.

Wow! That is gorgeous. The color and warmth are remarkable. "Bag Project," you say? No kidding, that took a lot of planning and commitment.

Thanks again for all the great comments
They are sincerely appreciated.

Ron, the strap is just cotton
I’m not too satisfied with it and
May eventually do something nicer?

Hey Tim. No, I cheated and bought leather
Covered buttons with wire loop backs.
They were perfect for the job
And fairly matched the original
Game bag I was copying. They were only
A few bucks for a card of four at the local
Craft shop. The loop is pushed through a small slit
In the face of the pocket and a leather thong
Slid through the loop to secure the button. A dab of glue
Secured the thong. No stitching, and the
Button hugs the pocket better.

Tim, you did a bang up job on the bag. Made one with due claws years ago and that was enough for me.

Thanks again for all the good words,
I am humbled. But It’s really not a hard
Bag to do, however it is pretty time consuming
For sure. I want to do another and
Think the hardest part is going To be finding
the dew claw strip Pieces. Thanks again
TC

As usual Tim you have produced another beautiful bag. I really enjoyed your article in Muzzleloader Magazine and the detailed account on how it was made. The highlight of receiving the Muzzleloader  magazine is seeing your articles. Thanks for all you do for the black powder community...
Kind Regards

That should be pretty easy, just ask on here come hunting season or in the fall hit your local deer butcher, I"m sure they'd let you have all you want.
