I completed the below rifle for a client a short time ago. The client wanted a late period half stock English Sporting rifle in 54 cal. O/R barrel 34" long. the rifle was to be equipped with double set triggers and an L & R Durs Egg lock. He provided a video of a similar rifle, so I had a real good idea of what he wanted. We communicated back and forth throughout the build, and he was quite pleased with the end result. The rifle ended up weighing 7-1/4 lbs.; it is easy to carry and mounts easily. It will make a great hunting rifle and a standout on the range.

“He was quite pleased” I’m sure he was! I know I would be. As much as I love the American longrifle, there is something about the fine English guns that draw me like a moth to the flame. I have original rifles and smoothbores as well as contemporary rifle and they handle like a dream. As they were hunting guns as opposed to hunting/defense/daily carry guns they tend to be in great shape. Yours is one I would be proud to own.

Very nice indeed! Nice carving and checkering on really fine wood!

Love it. Wow that is gorgeous. Reminds me of the checkering and carving on Mike Brooks English rifle #309, I think it is. (Which I saw for sale yesterday at Friendship).
-
Really nice rifle, Ron. Love the finish on that beautiful piece of wood.

Hi Ron,
Very nice rifle and undoubtedly a fine shooter. The stand-up British design cannot be beat.

You hit this one out of the park for sure. The engraving adds so much style.

Beautiful! How did you finish the metal?

Great looking rifle, Ron! Thanks for sharing.
-
Awesome, but is that a gap between the barrel and plug or is it a trick of the light?
-
Hi,
No, that is because the top of the standing breech is a little higher than the barrel so the groove clears the top barrel flat.

Dave,
Thanks for explaining how the standing breech is supposed to be fit, and your photo. Shadows in photography can make things look different from what they actually are.
Thanks to all for all the nice comments, this was a fun project and the client was very well pleased. Nicely figured walnut is one of my most favorite woods to work with. t
the finish is a semi gloss spar varnish thinned and applied in 8 very thin coats. A light wash of laurel mountain walnut stain was applied and highlighted with trans tint dyes.
The barrel was boiled in a dilute solution of water and Clorox for about 15 minutes then scrubbed aback and finished with rubbed back super blue. Ron

A. Verner did a similar "treatment" with the tang.

Ron, that is a beautiful piece of art and a great shooter I am sure! and A nice weight. My .58 cal English with a 42" barrel weighs about the same... I load it lightly!

I think "WOW" is an understatement.
Wonderful work, as always.
