Title: Canteen Cover
Post by: Nhgrants on August 25, 2019, 04:45:06 PM
I have a kidney shaped tin ( stainless) canteen a would like to make a cover for it.
I would use this at rendezvous or hunting.  Any suggestions for cover material?
Would buck skin work? Wool? Linen? Thanks

I've used both leather and wool.  I like the wool more now, easier to work with.  This is probably the same canteen you have:

That's an old scrap of milsurp wool blanket.  I ran a leather strap around the bottom and stitched it to the wool.  The canteen now has a good sized dent in it from a fall but the cover held up.

I also put a boiled-leather pouch on it.  Handy for keeping some trail rations in, and it's one less thing to carry.

On the tin or copper canteens I would use wool. The wool repels water some what and dries out fast. from the photos you can see I don't cover the top just my preference.
