Title: front sight holding gizzy
Post by: AMartin on September 13, 2019, 06:07:20 PM
The other day , getting ready to file another pair of sight for the rifle I'm building , I thought hey .. I tired of trying to hold onto the front sight without smashing and leaving vise marks ...
I know you can buy a holding jig from Knob mt. but I didn't like the screws idea ...
So I took a stick of hard maple and made a (clothes pin) then filed a dovetail into the top and when squished into the vise jaws there is zero slippage ...

Thought I would share ..
Allen

Hi,
Thank you for sharing that Allen.  I made two today, one for sights and a larger one for wooden patchbox lids.

Great idea.  Simple but effective for a "hard to hold" part.

Now that is just plain slick. One of those forehead-smacking, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that moments...

You had better patent this. Hate to see it be like the wheel barrow and be centuries later for it to be taken by someone who wants to charge a premium for this to us all.

make the same thing out of metal, then you can solder in it for sight modifications.

I bet you could cut and file one out of a rail road spike.  ;D

Never would have thought wood would hold something that small in tiny dovetails. I'll have to make one now.
