Title: Restore a Norwegian farmersgun
Post by: runastav on September 27, 2019, 09:11:33 PM
Hi all! In Norway we have a lot of so called (Bondebørser) farmersgun? The farmers bought discarded military muskets and rifles and use parts to build huntinguns. Here I have a rifle around cal 50 and I think its only the Lock so have a militær history original flintlock but converted to percussion. The forestock needs a lot og regluing and some New Wood i see wats show cup when progress ;)See the rear sight its typikal Norwegian and much used on ours Box barrels

Very nice!  We’d call that a “barn gun”. Good project!

What do you intend to do with this one Runar?  The rifle looks to me to have been stocked up from a collection of parts.  This will be fun.

By the way, I have your pistol parts engraved, boxed up, and ready to send home.

Hi all!  And thank you, a barn gun okey. Taylor, yes its build of parts like they do the farmers blacksmiths. It deserves to repairs so its Lock funksjon and the Wood hang toghether. Some old repairs With brass string is no good so I start removing it and reglue the forestock New Wood must be glued on. Taylor i look forward to see the engraved pistol parts thank you I am a Lucky man :)

This is a very interesting rifle!  I'm looking forward to seeing more photographs as the restoration continues.

I'm curious, and have a few questions...  What is the length of the barrel?  Are all of the mountings made of iron?  Does the stock have a cheekpiece?

Thank you!

Hi all! Notchy Bob, the barrel l is 86,5cm (34") the mountings is iron and the Stock have no cheekpiece.I come  to the metalparts must finish the Stock first a LOT og gluing and New Wood. Yes I could make a New Stock, but i have several long guns from the same Norwegian farm and must keep it most autentisk. before I started on this rifle I do similar job on a gun made With a ex military musket barrel and the blacksmith have forge a choke on the muzzle, they was smart the oldtimers ;) Okey, here is more new wood.

I have an inexpensive English single shot shotgun which has been choked the same way.

Very interesting restoration!

Hi guys! Thats Nice Hudnut! The Lock has been heavely used as a first flintlock and then percussion. The hole for the tumbler was oval so I make a bushing for the hole. Sharpsighted will see hat the tumbler have an old repair in half/full sear.

The swage choke as pictured, is still used on most cheap single shot, break-open shotguns sold here in NA.

That is an interesting lock, Runar.  It has seen much use, as well as aging.  Are you going to keep it percussion, or re-convert it to flint?

Like a few other posters, I always look forward to seeing your work on here.  Innovative, and very, very precise.

This question is a little off topic  but this project made me curious.
Is there any active interest, events or hobbies related to flintlocks in Finland.
Thanks
