I just recently finished this rifle and thought I'd share some pics. It's a .50 cal, 46" Rice "B" weight, Chambers Early Ketland lock and Reeves furniture. The wood came from Wayne Dunlap. It was stained with LMF American Walnut over Honey Maple as described in a previous thread, then a few coats of permalyn. The Barrel and lock are cold blued with Super Blue then rubbed back with steel wool and WD-40. Also, did some petina on the brass. As always, suggestions/comments are always welcome...

Ed,
Beautiful rifle! I really can't offer any suggestions other than get started on another one. I'd love to shoulder that rifle and see how a 46" B weight .50 feels. Nice I'm guessing.
-
VA,
Beautifully executed. Nicely done.
-
Ed, very handsomely done. You should be proud of yourself. Looks so very crisp and clean. Exquisite fit up, tasteful carving, this gun has it all.
Thanks for posting your work, Ed.

I just recently finished this rifle and thought I'd share some pics. It's a .50 cal, 46" Rice "B" weight, Davis early colonial lock and Reeves furniture.

One word:
WOW !!
-
Fantastic carving. How did you do the beautiful metal finish?
-
That's my kinda rifle! I'd be proud to carry and shoot it!
GOOD JOB!
-
Ed,
It is a real nice piece of American Art............only problem is that it is not under my Christmas Tree!!!!! ;D ;D ::)
-
Very nice, clean, crisp and sharp. Fine workmanship.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, as always greatly appreciated.
Nate... The barrel was simply cold blued with Super Blue, then rubbed back. Same with the lock. The brass was treated with 44/40, then rubbed back as well with fine steel wool and WD-40. Not everyone likes that particular look with brass, but I do, and use it regularly.

Great rifle Ed...I like it all!!
-
I can only add to what has already been said. Beautiful rifle!!
-
Ed,
Nice job, as usual. I like that barrel color. Wish I had used that instead of the Oxpho on mine, yours looks more natural like.

Very nice work Ed. Your finish on the maple really pops the curl. I have one of those early Ketland locks also . I think it is really a blank slate ( lots of flat surface ) that some engraving would look outstanding on. I'm gonna do mine this winter.
-
Gorgeous gun. Thanks for posting those pics. Outstanding carving.
-
That is a beautiful musket. I generally tend to lean toward iron furniture, but that finish on the brass really could make me change my mind.

Just count me an envious of your craftsmanship Sir! ;)

Wow, I'm awestruck! It is absolutely a work of art! How are you going to shoot that thing? It's too beautiful to get dirty!!!!!
-
Super nice rifle, Ed. I like the metal finish. Is the cold blue durable? (just researching for next project)
-
Ed. Very nicely done. Well executed, clean, proportional, good fits, clean carving, just an all around exquisite job.... Man..... you did a Super jib.......... ;)
-
Ed,
You did a fine job on this gun. I especially like the blueing on the barrel and lock. Pretty piece of wood too. I hope she shoots as fine as she looks! Thanks for posting the pics.

Ed,
Beautiful Rifle!
Did you think about not using a patch box?
Should I or shouldn't I? or is it my imagination that I could hear you thinking?
Great wood and Excellent craftsmanship!

Thanks again for the kind words everyone... I would have gotten back sooner but have been spending the better part of the day digging out from our 20" snowfall. Thanks God for Mr. John Deere!
The rifle is for a lady who lives in Washington State. I just spoke with her today and it arrived safe and sound yesterday. She was very happy, so that made me very happy! As with most of the guns I build for someone, I took a bunch of pics during the process and sent them to her so she could track the process. I also got her involved by showing different carving ideas, finish choices, etc. She's going to do a collage of the photos and display them with the rifle, which I think is a pretty cool idea. I don't know if she'll even shoot the rifle. She's a certified Genealogist and has a very keen interest in Colonial America, but isn't a big shooter.
Leatherbelly... I've found cold blue to be very durable...
Thanks again, everyone.

Wow. Anyone would be proud to own that. Love the carving. That's enough to really stand out and not too much to be gaudy. Very tastefully done.
Just wondering. Did you get an optical illusion from the wrist area due to the wood grain? Before staining I'm sure it wasn't as much, but I suspect you had to readjust your eyeballs a few times whle working out the wrist area. Grin.
-
Ed, I know other folks have said it, but I had to say it too; that is a super gun! I like the smooth flowing lines and the clean crisp carving that is just the right height. If I could get a little more practice, maybe I could do as well.

Artificer... It is a highly figured piece of wood. Some folks like that, others not so much, and yes, it did get a little crazy around the wrist, lol...
Mark... I thank you sincerely, but I've got nothing on your carving...

Ed,
You have to be kidding on the carving. My carving and engraving is barely adequate. I think yours is way better. I always try to do too much.
