A lady sent this question to me. With her permission I am posting it here to see if anyone can remember this match. Any thoughts on the rifle?

"When I was a child, my father and his NMLRA had a gun range in Boston,
KY, during their time they had a gun match with PA, it was KY and PA
would have a match to determine who held the bragging rights, so to
speak, to call the longrifle theirs, and KY won. That rifle was dedicated
to the governor of KY at that time, and that longrifle was , so I was told,
to hang in the Governors mansion in the capital. This was in the 60's I
believe, I have pictures of the dedication of the rifle. My question is, where
is that rifle today, is it still in place, or has it been removed. I saw a
longrifle on tv hanging in the Whitehouse and it made me wonder.
My father, who was one of the team members, was Bob Smith, he passed on
at age 72,that was in January of 1999.

I have no idea of where the rifle might be, but, just as a matter of record, I think Reaves Goehring was on the Penna.

That Interstate match continues to this day. In 2012 we will hold our 50th annual shoot. The challenge from then Gov Scranton was delivered, via horseback, to then Gov Combs in 1963. The first match was held in PA and later that year a second match was held in Barbourville, KY. We are in the process of gathering as many pictures, articles, etc to have for the 50th celebration.
As far as the rifle is goes it did hang in the Governor's office for years and has since been moved to the Armory in Frankfort I am told.
Don, you are correct. Reeves was on the first team. I have pictures of both teams from those first two matches.

The pictures are in a copy of 'THE MUZZLELOADER" dated September-October 1963 and are very grainey and faint. I don't have the capability to scan and they probably wouldn't be legibile.

The first match was held Sept 28,1963 at the Daniel Boone Homestead near Reading, PA and the second was held Oct 12, 1963 at Barbourville, KY

Hi, I am Robert (N not M) Chadwicks daughter, Natalie. ( one of the twins that used to mill around the gun shop in Chadds Ford. I can try to answer any questions you may have about him. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 82. I have pictures of Reeves Ghoering and Dad, Dad and Governor Scranton etc. Reeves still works on rifles in York , Pa with my ex boyfriend, He married Reeves daughter, small word. Anyway...let me know if I cna help, I just now found this forum.

That would or could be an excellent book on contemporary rifles. Especially if the right information, rilfes scores and such was gathered. Something like Ned Roberts excellent description of the Creed's Moor shoot in his book.

I am under the opinion that other states hosted their shooting teams to compete......Ohio, Indiana, Michigan....are there still states shooting teams?

I think Pennsylvania and Kentucky started it but now a whole bunch of other states have joined this shoot.

We are still going. This will be the 51st annual match. Hopefully we will get Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee to show up.

It is my understanding that many states used to come and compete, but participation has dropped off some over the years. I know Pennsylvania and Tennessee are expected this year. Not sure about other states, but we would like to see a bunch!

BTW, I made the Kentucky second team this year, just barely, but I made it. This will be my first time to shoot in the match. Yes, I'm pretty jazzed to get the chance.

I have a news article for 1996 or there abouts with the second line team going to shoot in Kentucky. I list the shooters for that year if I can find the article. Someone has to be keeping records of these shoots.

The rifle that the Ky. Team won in 1963 was put up by the Pennsylvania team and was borrowed from a museum. It is an original John Knoll. It was placed in the Governors office, moved to the old armory which was a military museum in Frankfort and moved from there to its current home, the Adjudent General of Kentucky. The Story told me by Ronnie Fuller ( the last surviving member of th 1963 Kentucky team ) is that Pennsylvania wanted their borrowed rifle back. To which the Ky team responded "fine, come down here and win it back".
I am the President of the Ky Corps of Longriflemen and a student and collector of info on the first Interstate Shoot in 1963.
We are still alive an well and continuing with the Interstate shoot. Any states wishing to join us in this wonderful event, get in touch with me!

Hi Centershot, I'm not Wayne, but I know the dates.

The Spring Interstate Flintlock Shoot will be held on May 10, 2014, at Ellwood City, PA.

The Fall Interstate Flintlock Shoot will be held on October 4, 2014, at Boonesborough State Park, KY.

All states are welcome to send a 5-man team(s).

I used to shoot in this match with the New York State team back in the 90's. My son was forced into shooting one year and was given a prize for being the youngest shooter there. He was 13 if I remember right. We always had a great time there.
