Sydney,
the trick is to be careful when you are starting the thread die. I clamp my guard in the vice with lead sheeting or jaw pads. get the shank section as vertical as possible front to back side to side. If you have a section of tubing that slips over the stud all the better to check your position. now start your die keeping it as level as possible. The other trick is to make your self a hollow cutter to face off the area around the stud on the guard it self so when you screw it into the trigger plate its good and flush with out gaps.

Inlay the trigger guard.   Drill the hole for the tang bolt. Then with the trigger guard installed, put the tap down thru the tang bolt hole and thread the stud on the trigger guard with the tap thru the tang bolt hole.  This will insure perfect alignment of the threads.

So what you are saying Jerry is that the stud on the guard is a bolster to be drilled and taped to recieve the tang bolt rather than threaded and screwed into the trigger plate?.

Jerry, what a great idea! That would also eliminate the trigger guard tightening to the plate orientated in the wrong position. Beautiful!

It depends entirely on the type of gun and trigger plate being used.  Most English guns have a stud cast into the trigger plate.  The tang bolt threads into the top of the stud and the trigger guard into the bottom of it.  It is not always possible to get a single, straight thru hole for both, and they are usually threaded differently.  This is one of the PITA features of an English rifle and care must be taken to get everything right.
