Finished pair of silver kentucky pistols. (Fixed pictures)
« on: February 11, 2011, 01:47:04 PM »
I've finished the pistols and I would like to thank everyone for their advice and help on this project. Everthing but the locks and barrels are made from scratch. The pair is a Right and left hand pistol with L&R Bailes locks. The barrels are strait octagon, GM, 12"long, 15/16" wide, caliber 0.50 . They are rust blued with home made mixture of iron chloride and alcohol, inlaid with 24k gold wedding bands and stars. Plan to get a jeweler to engrave my name on the silver name plated inlet in the barrels. All the silver furniture is made from sheet metal. The stocks made from curly maple and stain with iron/vinegar and finished with home boiled linseed oil. The ramrods are made of African black wood which was the closest I could get to ebony. When I've finished the accouterments, I plan to case the pistols in black walnut.

Best regards
Rolfkt

Hi Rolfkt,
I am most impressed.  The pistols are beautiful, each by themselves, but to achieve such symmetry when placed side by side makes this absolutely stunning.  My complements.

Rolf,
That's absolutely outstanding craftsmanship in every respect!
Cudo's to you for the skills you exhibit, and to this forum for helping you along with your questions. These fine pistols almost seem like a community project!

My suggestion; Learn to engrave! The gold stars and bands are finely done, so you certainly have the skills to do scrolls and lettering!

Congratulations on these beauties!

Hi Rolf,
Beautiful Rolf!!  Those are as nice a brace of pistols as I have ever seen.  I'll bet the case will be gorgeous.  I love the dots at the ends of the wire scrolls.  That is such an old traditional artistic device that is missing on most modern-made guns with wire inlay.  So how does an aspiring physician find the time to do such time consuming work?

Drop dead gorgeous!  Your workmanship must be applauded.

Two remarks though...first, learn to engrave.  It is not especially difficult and you obviously have the talent.  Second, find a piece of pale blue or grey material that is non reflective to act as a photographic drop sheet.

Congratulations of such an achievement.  To built a pistol of that quality might be considered "X" amount of skill and labour, but to make a pair, and in opposite hand, is certainly not "2 X"...perhaps 10 X!!

All I can say is WOW. Beautiful set of pistols. I agree with JTR and Taylor. Learn to engrave. If you can do this kind of work, you can handle your own engraving.
