Received my new issue of muzzleloader mag today and saw the rifles that were made for the auction for  this years CLA fundraiser. WOW! The color photo of Ians 'rifle really blew me away. nice work! I would like to know how he achieved the color on the steel patchbox as well as the other furniture? nice pewter color.

thanks for any clues,Lonny

Hey Lonny!  I don't remember the exact order I did that one in, I probably started by lightly pitting with bleach, just enought to give it some teeth, then browned it to death for a while , like for a week or so, no carding.
From there you can sand it back, and either let it color up on it's own for a while or hit it with some cold blue to darken the pits and low spots. I kind of watch what is happening and try to figure out what I need to do to keep things headed in the right direction
