My Favorite Junk Store

Have you ever been to this  junk store ? At this particular moment it was a rather exciting place  to be .....
I realize the photo is rather poor, but  who  do you think the maker is ??   LP

The carving sure looks Lancaster-ish; A Albrecht, Dickert, Graef,,, but the comb line seems to say something different. Or maybe it's just the picture.
Whatever, it's for sure a fine rifle!!

I thought this post might drag out a few collectors and dreamers ..   FK , seems like I have  a very vague remembrance of that type fantasy, but at this point I am really not sure ?
As JTR said the photo is a bit deceiving .. Yes the comb line looks like Berks County . In real life , not so much ..Dennis  said Jacob Dickert ??  JTR  thought Lancaster and gave a few possibilities ..They both had it part right ..The rifle is actually one of Jacob Metzgers earilyer Lancaster guns , with a daisy type patch box , signed bbl. never shortened and the wood does goes all the way to the end ..Yes, arrangements were made to put this rifle in a relocation program .
  As for the hot wheels trade , I will have to keep that offer  from my grandson !!     Sorry but I have no photos at this time ..My wife will  take them and it will be at her pleasure, if you know what  I mean ...  LP

Beautiful rifle.  Do you think this was made while he was in Lancaster or Maryland?

His work really does look to be in a stylstic transition between the Lancaster smiths and the stuff made south of Maryland, in the Shenandoah Valley. That "soft" comb line like you see on some Virginia guns - not severe, just slightly radiused.

Guy.....  I certainly can't say for sure , all I have is an opinion  and that is, it was made in Lancaster .. The comb is not competely straight,it does have a very slight curve .. but the photo is a bit deceiving, the comb about where it's  hid behind the wrist has an angle change that goes to the wrist .Also the angle the rifle is laying gives it a slight roman nose look ..I have seen two of his rifles that I felt were made in Lancaster . This one and one that I felt was a bit earlier ...Most of his later pieces that I have seen have no or very little resemblance to these two rifles .

On the other hand , on one told these guys that when they left a certain  County , say Lancaster,  that they should quit making rifles that looked like Lancaster .. Had they known how confusing  this made it for us I   bet they would  have done different .......LP

I don't think I would have considered Metzger, but the carving is very similar to that shown in Hartzler and Whiskers Maryland Longrifles book on page 54.
Is the patchbox similar to the oine shown on page 53?

Actually I started to ask if it was a Metzger but decided it was closer to a Dickert should have stuck with Metzger but either one was a guess ;D
