Wanted: Information on 18th Cent Grotesque guns
« on: November 14, 2008, 02:08:41 AM »
I am looking for guns that have grotesques as a major part of the gun's design. One example is the Hauschka fowler in the Met's collection. Others i have seen are 19th Cent shotguns, where the end of the pistol grip is a face, a soldier, a duck. But these are too late. I want early.

Reward offered: grotesque pumpkin seeds.

Hey Tom, Never thought you weren't serious! A good thought: a few more Tankards and then keep a note pad by the side of your bed Guarantee you'll get some good ideas! ( Where do you think I get mine?) ;D

Haben Sie das Buch "SteinsShloss-Jagerbuchsen, Kunstwerke der Buchsenmacher aus dem 18. Jahrhundert"? Some of the Jagers have some pretty wild carvings. I think Jim Chambers and Barbie have it in stock with an English translation I've been told.

I finally got off my bum and took a couple of photos for you.  The gun is only a stock at present and I presume to be german in origin.  It is currently percussion and the locks show no sign of being converted but I also suspect it was originally a flint gun.  Forgot to mention it is a double barrel shotgun.

cheers Doug

Thanks, Doug. That is awesome. I suspect your stock is later than the gun I depicted, as the mask carving at end of the pistol grip seemed to be in vogue in the early 19th Cent up to mid 19th. From what I can see, your stock is quite robust, and certainly could have been flint. Most wonderful carving on the grotesque, very lifelike. The tail of the trigger guard appears to be part of the stock wood, carved to look like the brass or steel furniture of the day. Neat stuff. Thanks for posting.
