E-Z bench, free pdf
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:56:09 PM »
FineWoodworking has this PDF on the web for free download/printing. No jointer or planer necessary, although I have both. I've been wanting a quickie bench to use the drawer boxes I made 40 years ago for a tool chest. The chest is no longer useful to me, so I sized the base to hang the drawers, and Robert's-your-mother's-brother.  ;)

For a top I used a hunk of salvaged bowling alley. Cheep. Watch for dead bowling alleys in your neighborhood. Use a sacrificial carbide blade as they are FULL of nails (:o), fortunately pretty soft steel. Hint: the first few feet of an alley is maple; the rest is usually southern yellow pine. They usually want a premium for the maple, but the SYP makes a fine bench top.

Thanks for posting this on here.  I need to change what I already have and this looks like it's going to be it.   ;D

Never know when you might need another benchtop to help unclutter your main bench!   ;D

You can also ask you local kitchen counter folks... Theyll usually give you old counter tops they have pulled out of houses for nothing to save them the cost of taking it to the dump.

My problem is that I just end up with another cluttered bench.  Perhaps I should build cabinets instead. :-\

Enjoy, J.D.

Great information!
For my top, I used left over hardwood flooring.
Not all pieces match, thickness is the same, but grain of wood is different.
Doesn't really matter, because you can't see the top of my bench anyway. ;D
Happy New Year!
