Special Loading Block
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:49:34 PM »
I was asked by U.S. Army veteran to make a special bullet board / loading block.  He was in the Army for 13 years before residual wounds caught up with him and he left the service.  He went back to school to become an ordained minister and is writing a book.  I was happy to make the block in the shape he asked for.  The wood is ebony and the holes are sized for .45 cal round ball.  The maker's mark is die struck in copper and inlayed.

What's the quote from "Patriot"

Very appropriate and nicely done.

Holy cow Dave, that is nice.
Did you use a lapp joint where the wood crossed?

Haha!  Smiley, I was just looking at that!  Looks like a half-lap joint (each pice cut away to 1/2 thickness of stock); a lap joint would be when two pieces are just laid over each other with no reduction in thickness in either piece (like when you lay one piece over another to make an "X:).

Neat work Dave!

Gee...almost forgot I made that and posted it.  Yes, the two cross pieces are half lapped where they cross.

A fellow recently emailed me after seeing this post about a special bullet board I made for an Army vet.  He asked me to make one for .36 cal ball but out of olive wood instead of ebony.  I am making another out of Kauri wood (50,000 years old !) and will post pictures when I get them done.
