Another Double Horn
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:12:23 PM »
When I found these horns they were a homemade wall rack. It is about 15: around the outside curve and 9 ½ tip to tip.The Walnut connector plug is about 2”, it is drilled out 1 ¼” so the powder will flow between the two. The bands at the base are held with four pins each that also hold the horns to the plug. The tips are horn pinned on with three pins each, the rear tip is solid. The color is oil based leather dye followed by Brown shoe polish.

Tim,
Real nice looking set. These are usually so big that they don't look good but these are well scaled and nicely matched.

That is good stuff.  I have a small set of horns that I have had for a while with the idea that one day I would build one of these.  Well done.

I like it.  I have a pair of medium sized buffalo horns I would like to make into a double set like yours.  I really like the joint treatment with the raised mid section beads, and the horn ring overlays.  All ensuite.  Is the plug hollow so powder goes straight through?

Really nice.
Is it true only one side of a double was typically filled? Seems like it would defeat the purpose.

 Thanks for the complements.

Taylor, yes the base was drilled through with a 1 ¼” spade bit. Once turned round between centers it was chucked up in the late and drilled. Then using a four jaw chuck, expanding grip, both ends were turned to fit the horn and the design was turned.

SligoBill, I have never seen one that was not drilled through. I did see one that had both tips drilled and a solid base supposedly so one end would carry powder and the other side shot. I would think that would be heavy and awkward as in having to turn the horn around to pour shot, assuming the  powder was in the front horn.

One side could carry course powder for the barrel and the other for priming powder. Great job on the horns Tim!
