This is a rifle I finished up for delivery at Dixons.Its based on RCA #28 and is one that isn't often done. I was excited to be asked to make it.The wonderfully unique patchbox was particularly fulfilling to make.Being that the side hinge is part of the surround it caused some tense moments.The rifle sports a .54 cal Getz barrel,a piece of Freddie Harrisons stump cut walnut and was stained with aqua fortis.As always all questions and comments are welcome.

Mitch, I admire you. That is a beautifull recreation of # 28, one of my personal favorites in RCA I. My hat is off to you. I have been waiting for these pictures.

Both Reeves #8's althought the buttplate must be heavily peaned to get enough width.

Looks great. How chippy was that highly figured buttstock to carve?
How dilute is the AQF you used to stain it? I seem to get black with AQF on walnut.

very nice gun. Great archetechture, your metal work is great, and your carving is great. Love the color of the wood in the sun. You do such goood work I can't find anything to pick on you with. How much drop does that thing have.

Beautiful job on the stock! I'm with Rich--how did you get that color with AQF? I'd have been reaching for potassium dichromate, and probably still turned parts of it black.

Mitch, despite my smartass attitude, this is one nice rifle, the architecture is as pure and clean as it gets. You really have an eye for form, and know how to accomplish it. Then add the patchbox, and you have quite an accomplishment. Kudos.

The aqua fortis is my standard home brew of 1 part acid to 4 parts distilled water.To this I add wrought iron from some old spikes from a 1700's house.When first applied the wood turns flat black.When blushed it turns brown.

I knew that's what you meant by the "nice wood" comment

I got a PM about the lock.It's a Siler that I unbridled like the original and modified the tail slightly.

Nice work Mitch. I especially like your lock treatment/modifications. You pulled off the butt stock shaping very well, especially considering all that drop you had to work in.

3 3/4 " is exactly the same drop as I have on my scaled photo copy of #28. I do not like the patchbox design on # 28, but the lines of the buttstock profile are as beautifull as it comes IMHO of an early Berks Cty. I wish you had done it in a fine curly maple, but I cannot deny, that is a beautifull rifle. Tell us about the barrel specs. .54 cal Getz, how long? looks to be 42".

The drop really is'nt that bad and is what the original scaled out at.The extra drop helps keep these roman nosed guns shootable.I shot this one with no problem.

That's one beautiful riflegun! You did a superb job on it. I know how "difficult" walnut can be when trying to get carving detail right and you mastered it. Super, super rifle!

Yea this was one I did'nt want to let go of.I like these big early guns.It went to a good home though with a person who really likes Reading guns.
