Recycling pewter filings?

I've been getting a lot of practice with pouring pewter lately.  Pour, screw up, re-pour.  Anyway, I had the bright idea of putting a sheet of newspaper under the vise and catching most of the pewter filings with the intent of remelting them.  Unfortunately most of it burns up and turns into slag with very little usable pewter recovered.  Over-pour areas that are big enough to remove with a hacksaw can be remelted with no problem.  The filings are clean pewter with very little, if any, foreign material, wood dust, etc.  Am I doing something wrong when melting the filings?

Mix all the filings with some rosin flux before melting. $#@* like iron, wood, charcoal should float to the top, skim it off, and you should have pretty clean metal. Copper or brass filings may 'solder' in to the mix, so try to keep your filings very clean.

 Don't waste your time with the filings, I tried it many times and it is not worth it.
