A Colonial Fowler...
« on: November 01, 2012, 02:57:03 AM »
I just finished this Fowler and thought I'd share some photos...  It's a Dunlap red maple stock, barrel inlet by Dave Keck, Chambers lock, Not sure of the butt piece and trigger guard as they'd been laying around the shop for a while...  Colerain barrel.  Finished with Aquia Fortis and Permalyn.  The AF is my home made mixture, and the metal I used was from a piece of yankee case shot dug up on a friends farm, which I thought was pretty cool.  Anyway, critiques, questions, comments welcomed...

Outstanding! I love everything about it. May I ask how you finished the metal on the barrel and lock?

That turned out very nice Ed.  Simply elegant without being over the top.  I picture a dead duck or two as I look at your fowler.  Superb engraving.

Ed,
Really a great looking gun, love that engraving on the buttplate.
Is that the buttplate you had in the back of the car at the bar-b-q lunch?

That's a good piece. looks like you have a copy of Schipper's engraving book around..... ;)

Thanks all for the kind words, greatly appreciated.

Satwel, the finish is very simple.  The barrel and lock were cold blued, then rubbed back to the desired color with a scotch brite pad and Balistol.  I've used motor oil in the past and that works well also.

Larry & Dennis, yes, that was the butt piece I had at the BBQ lunch.

It's a .20 ga, 46" Colerain barrel, and yes, Mike, I do have a copy of Schipper's book in the shop!, lol...

Very impressive. I love the finish, and the nice engraving. I very much appreciate you having the good sense to display it on a neutral background, so all the fine details can be seen. I know photographing your pride and joy in front of an old out house door, or on top of sixty three home tanned skunk hides is ever so artsy fartsy, but its not a good way to show your hard work.

Hey Ed, if you don't want that old ugly thing laying around your shop embarrassing you in front of company and the such, then just let me know and I'll drive up and take it off your hands for you.   ;D

There are many guns that pass through my hands in this shop and lots of those are beautiful.  But it is a rare few that would get me to actually give up my hard earned cash for them.  This one however, should be hanging here in the show room with the collection of Chambers, Silver's, Gahagan's, and Kiblers!  Just Spectacular!

Ed, fantastic is all that comes to my mind. Border engraving is beautiful to say the least. If i may ask, what tools do you
use to create such border work? Regards--MikeH

Excellent workmanship, Ed.  You did a wonderful job slimming the forearm along the barrel channel.  Your engraving adds just the right amount of bling.

Thanks again, everyone...

Mike, the borders were done with a graver.  Typical nick and dot boarder.
