Powder Horn

I found an old, raw horn at an antique shop last week, it was cheap, so I figured I’d make another horn. Not really modeled on any particular period. I turned the plug from Sycamore and the stopper from Crepe Myrtle. Working on a woven strap for it.

Very nice work. I like how you left some of the surface of the raw horn, definitely gives it some character.

I have made a handful of horns from raw stock horns (vs polished).  It adds quite a bit more work to the finished product. So I only do it anymore when I come across a really nice shaped double twist raw horn.  Otherwise, I leave them for others.  This is one I would have passed on personally.  But hats off to you for taking the time and effort necessary to pull a powder horn from it.  👍✅   Sometimes it’s to prove to ourselves that we can.  I have done it myself before.

 Nice rescue. Just my thinking but since it looks well aged maybe the butt should be dinged and scratched up as well.

Nice rescue.  Top Jaw's comments on working rough horns made me smile as I just finished cleaning up a raw buffalo horn.  They can be a pain but really look nice when finished.

Just wanted to show a photo of the completed strap and horn. I used 1” wide lantern wick, came in a 6’ roll. Used some Ritz to stain it a camel tan. Never used any lantern wick before, but it’s strong. Cut some leather ends and saddle stitched them on. Nothing fancy or accurate but should work well in the woods.
