Dave,
Here is one I use to own. Had the Brass Inlay as well. Definitely strengthened the trigger guard. On page 351 Flintlock Jaeger Rifles, they call these wooden trigger guard Jaegers, Capuchin. Also stating, that many of them are reinforced with a metal band inlet into wood.

I have never particularly understood why the germans often used wooden trigger guards; to me they seem bulky and fragile although the brass inletting would reinforce them somewhat

cheers Doug

It's done in imitation of stylish Italian guns, which often had triggerguards carved right out of the stock wood itself.  Generally referred to in German auction catalogs as a "Capuzinerschaft".  (Capuchin stock)
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

Those kooky Germans!  The Austrians were even kookier.   ;D

I like the wood and horn trigger guards. Wood butt plates not so much.  :-\

I'm also kookoo for Cocoa Puffs.  :)
