Long Rifle Chest

 Awhile back there was some talk about long rifle chests. Here is what I came up with. It is about 68X19X16 1/2". It will hold 5 rifles the drawer is about 25X15X5". The drawer has two pins that hold it in place and cannot be opened unless top is unlocked, opened and the pins are removed. I made the hinges and drawer pulls. It is kept closed by a brass half mortise box lock.

Tim, that is really nice. I have some 14 inch wide walnut that I plan to make a similar chest. It needs to air dry a few more months. I had asked the mill to cut to quarter saw two rifle blanks out of the log and he forgot and cut 1 X 14" so I needed a project to use them own. Hope mine turns out anywhere near as nice as yours.

 I forgot to say but this one is just pine and believe it or not there is close to 45+ feet of wood in it.

Very nice Tim.  Many of us have talked about building a long rifle chest.  Congratulations on being one of the first to actually complete the project.  I, like others before me have thought about it but have not put saw to wood.  I have a set of plans drawn up and a new shop so I am running out of excuses.  Maybe this summer.  I have my wife convinced that a rifle chest will make a great coffee table.  Once again, nice job.

Now that is a great idea! I live in an apartment, wall space is very limited, but a gun chest is perfect in front of the bed or sliding glass doors. Just gotta get of my keister to start another project.   ...Geo.

Tim,

Great job on your rifle chest.  I saw the thread on rifle chests awhile back and the possibilities are really endless.  This is a great idea to house your long rifles.

Nice design and great job!  Good to see another woodworker! I'd make one but it would have to hide under the bed as no where else to put one  ;D.  Unless I can convince my CEO that the current settee was abducted by aliens and then I'd have some room.

 Thanks for all the nice complements. I have another one in my head this one will be up on legs more like a sideboard and it may be covered in leather with brass tacks. In any case it will Have some leather and tacks incorporated into it.

 I have no pictures but the wood is unfinished and darkened because of the age. its about 5 foot long and two and a half foot wide and the same deep. I was using it to store expensive pool sticks but now its empty sitting in my garage. male me a offer I can't refuse.

 I love the idea of this chest, but can't help but think, how convenient for the burglars, all the guns in a nice box that two guys can carry off in one trip. A friend built a stand up version, several years ago,  that was packed off by some riffraff, and then dumped in a ditch, when they found that muzzleloaders are hard to sell, and easy to identify.
  His next project wasn't as pretty but worked better. He converted an old chest freeze into a gun chest. I helped him pull the compressor out of it, and pour the void full of re-enforced concrete. The lid is secured with a repurposed steering rack from a car, and a lug nut wheel lock that uses a special socket, this mechanism engages 7/8" rods that are incorporated into the steel framework that is welded into the lid. It ain't pretty, but when the same guys came back to get all the new stuff the insurance company had bought, they were caught spending too much time trying to get into the hillbilly gun safe.
