Custom built 1777 charleville
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:56:08 AM »
Good evening everyone, I just recently picked up a 1777 french charleville.

I know this isnt a longrifle but it is a gun that has alot of american history attached.

The guy I got it from said it was custom made for his father in law many years ago in the states by a guys who specialized in charleville muskets. Its got all the right markings for a charlie but on the top left side of the breech its marked 1989 which I assume is the year it was built.

I was wondering If anyone had any leads on who may have built it. I will get some pics together tommorow night and post em. I realize this is rather vague but figured I would give it a shot.

Cheers, McLean

I was guessing Kit also. He was about the only guy doing that kind of stuff in that time period.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Thanks for the info! That sounds like a reasonable explanation. Did he ever sign his guns anywhere out of sight mabye that I can look for ?
