Strange ramrod pipes
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:36:20 AM »
Hey folks,
Was going through a pile of old parts I have and came across these ramrod pipes from a halfstock gun.  They're just over 2.5" long, about 3/8" diameter or a smidge larger.  All of the detail is file work, not swaged.  Was wondering if anyone had seen anything like these and what they might have come off of?  Thanks for your thoughts,
-Eric

I've seen them on a very nice Silas Allen New England half stock rifle.I have an article on the rifle with pics somewhere. When I find it I will email it to you.

No but last year at the Gillespie reunion there was a Harvey Gillespie rifle there that one of his descendants owns. Pretty basic Gillespie mountain rifle but the middle pipe had Harvey's (H*G) initials stamped in it, very well done. Had never seen anything like that on any rifle. I did not have my camera with me so I have no photos.

Ha, I wondered what he heck had happened to those! Postage and my return address are in the mail!  ;D

Nice RR thimbles, and I'd think NE as well.

Craft Jackson worked in the Early Deep River School in North Carolina. He made a rifle with similar rope moldings on the entry pipe and ram-rod thimbles. The rifle also has gadroon engraving on top of the butt-plate and chevrons engraved on the nose cap.  These are unique features in North Carolina.

Here are photos of the entry pipe and thimbles.

Here are photos of the top of the butt-plate.

Here is the nose cap.

Thanks for your thoughts - Mitch nailed it with the New England rifle.  He shared a couple photos of the Silas Allen and the pipes are spot on duplicates of these.

Michael - that's a LOT of chevron file work! Thanks for sharing,
