Round Ball Supplier
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:42:15 PM »
A while back I had the contact info for a gentleman in GA that cast and sold quality RBs. I intended to call him to resupply and now I can't find his info. Does anyone know the name and number of who I'm thinking of?

I has proven impossible to search for this as about every other post on the forum includes the terms I have to search for. lol

Have you ever tried casting your own ? It's pretty easy and really satisfying to shoot something you cast yourself not to mention way less expensive. I have folks I know give me roof flashing, old battery terminals etc. every now and again as they know I cast my own RBs, don't cost me a dime except the electric to run the lead furnace.

For very good quality round balls consider this source.

Rush Creek Roundball, Tony Vance 937-468-7713
Tony Vance
PO Box 327
152 Bank St.
Rushylvania, OH 43347

I find the quality to be much higher from Rush Creek. The cost is higher but balls are much more precise and more importantly they are more consistent in weight and have fewer imperfections.

I recently got a bag of .283" round balls from Tony, the smallest he offers, in about 5 days after I sent him the check.
I am very pleased with the quality and also the speed of service.

I will get set up for casting one day, but right now I don't do enough shooting to warrant it.

Just a word of advice from an ol mountaineer-get yourself set up to cast your own while you still can, this includes gathering supplies before we cant access them.Same goes with reloading if you shoot centerfire or?There may come a time we wont talk about.best regards,Dave

AMEN!  I am NO expert, but I do reload a lot so I have a powder scale.  So I was shooting Hornaday and all other factory balls and one day I up and ordered this Lee Ball mould. I cast a bunch out of this Xray lead I got.
So I took some out and shoot em, wow these work good. so I took em home and weighed em. I found the ones I made are more consistent, with improved accuracy.   Casting Lead has been called hazardous by the state of California  Best do it on a windy day, OUTSIDE.
Here's my comparison,,these are .490's.
Hornaday           (Mine)           Cheepo
177.2            174                    178.1
176.5           174.4                 176
177.2            174                    178.3
177.2            174                    177
176.7          174.2                 176

I recently, Yesterday, got this lead, I cast a couple hundred balls, .490   ,,,While casting I didn't like the way the lead was acting.
When done these balls weigh in 14 grns lighter than my regulars. They are all uniform in weight but light.
They measure .490 and all. I figure I will set them aside and use em in my pistol.
Yall ever run into this?

sounds like an alloy of some kind. might check to see if you can tell if theyre harder than pure lead.    mark

Mark, you hit that nail square,,, if not for the sprue these would pass for wheel bearings,,, ::)

We dropped one on the garage floor and it bounced, talk about hard.
Conversation with my Grand Daughter, I told her how I was given the bad lead by a good friend, I have now learned to cast a few balls from a new stock of lead before casting 200.
So My Grand Daughter said, "So would you say you learned that the HARD way?".    OK I give, not funny now, but when she said it I rolled :D

A good cast ball is rounder than the squished and tumbled balls. All "swaged" balls I have measured have a significant belt that is .003 to .007 larger than the rest of the ball. But if tumbled the belt is less apparent.
Brass water valves are hazardous according the CA (If you MELTED it it will give off lead and zinc that would be a hazard) along with a host of other objects and activities that are in reality harmless. The "lead bullet scare" other than is a very few very limited situations is just a way, in the long term, to make shooting and firearms ownership more difficult. With any reasonable precaution there is no significant risk to casting bullets. If you cast in a closed broom closet maybe. Yeah some friends who were heavy bullet casters had themselves tested. So its not a guess.

Keep some airflow and there is no problem and of course WASH YOUR HANDS before eating etc. To remove any oxide.
Don't let the bullets corrode to a white powdery coating then handle them and then eat a sandwich.
Elemental lead is not that hazardous according to some things I read written by doctors who were specialists in heavy metal poisoning during the BS about shooting animals with lead bullets then ingesting lead when they were eaten. There is no problem with this but it made a good scare....

I deleted a few posts here due to the content. I suggest that some of you need to read the ALR rules shown below
Specifically prohibited topics or responses are:
Quote
1.  Current politics and religion including but not limited to gun control legislation.

2.  Advertisements of items for sale or services for hire outside the Items for Sale forum or any items or services that are not consistent with the allowable topics listed above.

3.  Any personal attack or personal criticism of another member of the message board.  You can criticize an idea but not a person.  There will be zero tolerance for this infraction.

4.  Defamatory characterizations of the products or services of specific vendors, manufacturers or makers.  Some discussion of products or services that may be construed by some to be negative will be allowed as long as they are specific, factual, objective and do not violate any other prohibitions such as the use of vulgar, obscene, or profane language.

5.  Any discussion of personal business including but not limited to financial transactions, customer service problems, or personal disputes.  The board may be used on occasion to facilitate a meeting or further communication between board members when there is a problem with other communication methods.   Members shall keep their e-mail address in their profile up to date in order to allow for personal communication offline.

6.  Any comments that can reasonably be expected to provoke an extreme emotional  response by other board members.

The administrator(s),  or moderator(s) shall edit or delete prohibited topics, as determined by them, without notice or liability to be followed by an e-mail warning to the offender.

And yes I am aware of what started the uproar and that is being dealt with.
Lets move on.
