We have been making a few design changes to the Late Ketland lock.  Those are now complete, and we are back in production.  It will take a month or two to get caught up on all the back orders, but we're working as hard as possible to get all the orders filled.

The late Ketland is my favorite flintlock, and I've used it on the majority of my builds in the last 10 years or so - I would be curious to know what changes you made and why?  Thanks!

Place a 'Want to Buy' ad in the classified section. It's amazing what turns up sometimes.

I have one I'd part with, that I got from Barbie a while back.  It has the brass lock plate though.  Al Martin was going to use it on a build for me , but we changed the design, and time period.  PM me if interested.

Right after I started producing this lock Gary Brumfield pulled me aside and suggested the cock was too heavy/massive.  Of course, he was right, and I promised him I would change it to be more historically correct.  I'm sorry I didn't get it done before Gary left us, but it's done now.  I also felt the mainspring we were using (the large Siler spring) was a little too heavy for the Late Ketland.  I have also made a new mainspring that we'll be using in the Ketland.

Interesting, Jim - on all but the first of these locks I used I've taken off considerable mass from the cock.  But I rather liked the heavy mainspring.  It'l be interesting to see your changes.  Thanks for the explanation.

I used to make a variant Ketland with a double throated or Reinforced cock.
The stiff mainspring is a possible cock breaker with the gooseneck styles.
The lock I made had a roller on the frizzen instead of the spring that worked against
a ramp/cam. I have thought about reviving this lock but it is more labor intensive than
I want to deal with.

Is the new mainspring going to be replaceable with the Siler spring?

Is this Lock going to be available in a left hand model? Kinda looking at one for a Isaac Haines down the road or a SMR.

The new spring will be interchangeable with the regular large Siler mainspring.  No, we have no plans to produce this lock in left hand.

Thanks Jim!  I was looking at it from a spare-parts/repair perspective; if the springs are interchangeable, obtaining spare parts is easier.  (The spare parts kit in my hunting bag won't have to be changed out when I change rifles!)

I recieved my new redesigned late Ketland from Jim yesterday. The mainspring is a little different, not much from the old style. The cock is noticeably smaller.

Any other physical dimension changes, and does it still take the same size flint as the large Siler?

It would be nice to have lefties of everything!

Just a trigger guard mold is a lot of work. I think it's got to be at least a couple of years to get a lock into production.

You can make a left hand shooter with a right handed lock. Lock doesn't get in the way of your sights. Hammer might block some of the flash, so it could be an advantage, even!
