Winchester School Rifle
« on: May 03, 2014, 02:43:05 AM »
This is a Simon Lauck inspired rifle from the Winchester, VA school I completed a little while ago.  The barrel is a Rice, Southern Classic profile in .50 cal.  Butt piece and trigger guard are from Reeves.  Lock is a Chambers late Ketland.  The box and furniture I made.  I was drawn to this box design because of the "key hole" in the finial, more than likely a play on Lauck's name, which is pronounced "lock".  The wood is from Dunlap, stained with home brewed Aqua Fortise, and finished with Permalyn and Tried & True.  Any questions or comments are welcomed.  The last two (and best) photos were taken by Mark Elliott.  Sorry for the poor quality on my photos, some of the brass and silver detail is washed out...

Wow, wow, wow, Ed. I am not worthy to be in your company!

@!*%, your gun skills grow by leap years at a time. Beautiful effort, and great provenance with it. Great to see an artwork like this, based on tradition, yet so much of the artist shows thru.

Please I hope you will still demo at ALR Dixon's tent this year, unless your head has grown so big, we need the Big Top for a tent.

Ed, Can't find anything I don't like. Color really catches my eye, sometimes hard to do with AF. Nice and slim. Love the tang carving really flows nicely, metal finish is spot on to my taste.

You have just guaranteed that I will never post a picture of any of my work.

Just beautiful, thank you for sharing.

Most excellent, I can't knock anything about it. The color and carving is really outstanding.

A really fine rifle. Bold and neat with good architecture throughout.  The only thing I can think of to be critical about is that the finish is dull. There is a visual difference between rifles that have been oiled and dull and rifles that have been varnished and rubbed back. Quality rifles were ALWAYS varnished Whatever that varnish was. Any longrifle of quality today that has an oil like finish is INVARIABLY a refinish.

Ed allowed me to handle this rifle at our Williamsburg show and I was in awe, the photos are nice but nothing like holding it in your hands. Great rifle in all respects!

Beautiful work Ed! I especially like the color. What finish technique did you use on the lock and barrel? It looks real nice.

Not to be contrary,  but my wife's great grandfather was a Lauck.  He was a college professor at some college back east.  They pronounced the name as Lowk.  She is a DAR and her aunt has compiled their geneology all the way back to minor English royalty.  It's a huge tome and I recall seeing a Lauck listed as a gunsmith in it.  I suppose it's one of those things were different branches of a family pronounce the name differently.

Ed,  what beautiful carving you have done!  The architecture is top notch as well!  The antiquing accents on the brass furniture it a bit bolder than I would prefer.....  Gotta say you are one heck of an artist!

Ed:  a very handsome rifle.  It has an overall feeling of great confidence and believability.  The combination of the AF colour, the brass and the rubbed back blue barrel compliment each other so nicely.  Your carving is excellent and particularly nicely finished out.  I like the rifle a lot.

Outstanding work!  What is the thickness of the wire inlay on the cheekpiece?  I have used .008" thick silver ribbon on a couple of guns but it hardly even shows up.  From your pictures the wire you used looks three times that width.  Is it hard to work with, and where did you get it?

Thanks very much to all for your input, and kind words!

I've heard both "Lowk" and "Lock", but everyone in the area of Winchester that I've spoken to has pronounced it "Lock", in a very decided Virginia accent.  Kind of like Staunton, VA is pronounced 'Stanton" by just about everyone from the area.  Might be a North / South thing?...

I used .010 thickness dead soft sterling silver wire for the boarder around the Hunters Star.   I primarily get the wire from Rio Grande, although MBS has it as well, and I think Track also carries it.

Thanks again....

Ed,
I've been around such a long time and seem so many fine rifles that it takes a lot to get me excited about a rifle these days, but I must say, that is one fine rifle.  I like just about everything about it.
