Congratulations Eric Von A
« on: July 30, 2014, 02:19:03 AM »
Hi,
For those folks who care how the judging went at Dixon's, let me be the first to say congratulations to our own young master, Eric Von A.  He swept the field for the master category and won best of show.  His pistol was an outstanding display of period craftsmenship, design, and art.  Good going Eric.  It was also a pleasure meeting you and your Dad.

Congratulations, Eric!  It is a great honor and from your work that I have seen I would say well earned.  That is fantastic news!

Pictures are still better than a thousand words. While on the subject of pistols.
I think I saw a letter stating that no current flintlocks are made today that are
suitable for a dueling pistol project. While at the Huntington Museum of Art
yesterday I looked at a cased set of Mortimer flint duelers and other than the
sliding "safety"behind the cock it looked like the size as the L&R small Manton.
I'm NOT trying to drum up and orders for them but those are elegant pistols and
all the components look in proportion to me.

Hey Folks,
Thank you for the kind words.  I'm excited and honored to have earned Best of Show this year.  This is a pistol I built over the winter and didn't get around to photographing.  It is a blend of Jacob Kuntz and Herman Rupp, in pistol form.  The lines are similar to Kuntz's red varnish flint pistols, but the carving and furniture are more in line with Rupp's 1797/1807 rifles.  It's stocked in a piece of dense and plane maple from a neighbor's 200 y/o tree.  I took some photos this afternoon with my phone, so please forgive any distortion from the tiny lens.  I'll have to borrow my girlfriend's SLR for better shots later on.  Smartdog also earned several Blue ribbons with his early cherry stocked flintlock.  It was exciting to see the stories he told through the engraving on the piece!  Lots of beautiful work at the show this year, and it was great to meet so many new ALR members.  Thanks again, I hope you enjoy the photos.
-Eric

Show off!  :D

Seriously good piece, Eric. It deserves the ribbons.

I'm also glad to see a real traditional piece coming to the front of the pack. We on the ALR build all kinds of guns, but I am most drawn to the true blue traditional works. Congrats!

Very nice light touch on the ageing, Eric. No pitting, gouging, bashing, or mashing. Just a little time passing with some good care. Excellent.

Hi,
Eric's photos are good but, like his recent Beck, the pistol has to be seen in the flesh and held to really appreciate its great qualities.

Eric:
Wanted to add my congratulations on your pistol.   Always like the octagon to round barrel on pistols of that era. All the details of your workmanship with the wood and metal really stand out.
Glad I could connect with you and your father for awhile on Friday.

Congratulations, what a beautiful piece of artwork.  :)  Very impressing. I was also impressed with the way your table was displayed at Dixon's gunmaker's fair, very charming.  :)
