First Time War Club
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:43:50 PM »
This was done by Jessie, my wife’s cousins’ husband (Glad that’s over with) he is in his early 30s. Over the last three years he has been working on a couple things here in the shop a couple of bows and a rifle. The rifle was his first, very plain but got used to the tools. Only pic I got, took it down, sighted it in and he was off and running. Took about a year and a half since he could only work on it on Sundays, noon to 6 most of the time. About the only thing I know for sure about it is that it had a Sliler lock that we made up from a kit, the barrel had been laying around the shop for years and we made the rest, he did find out that filing is not the most fun thing to do in rifle building.
He came back with a picture of a club and wanted to try one, so we came up with this. I had a couple of chunks of wood and we laid one out on it. He did 99% of the work,  I would show him and he did the work, like do an eye and he did the other.  It is Maple, with some old stain on it with BLO, Turpentine and wax rubbed into it.
Jess does not have internet access, they live way out, so I will show him this when he comes over tomorrow.

What's that nub sticking out of the ball?

Jim Dressler told how such dowel nubs were added to ball headed war clubs to punch a small lead hole in a skull...that concentrated the blow and let the weight and force of the rest of the ball make a really big dent rather than just bouncing off or cracking the bone. Years back he did an article on these war clubs for Muzzle Blasts I think...it went into depth about their use and construction.

The ones I have seen, (originals) had iron spikes, or iron pegs embedded in the head. A real skull cracker!

His work looks good Tim and it's really nice to see another young man getting into the craft. You're both to be commended. We all need to pass on all the knowledge that we have accumulated before we pass on.

Really neat!  How would a boar or bear tooth work instead?

It is a piece of antler. The thinking behind it was just as TC posted.

Not exactly a new idea; paleopoints found in Wyoming and elsewhere, dating back to at least 8000 years ago have a small tip on the proximal end which punctures the hide and permits the rest of the point to slide/cut its way into the animal. They have been found elsewhere through out the country, including Illinois.
