RUSS HAMM 14K GOLD INLAID 17 LOCK TRIGGER GUARD FLINTLOCK
« on: September 15, 2014, 08:36:01 PM »
I have had this for years and just dug it out again & thought I would share some pictures on some of the muzzleloading forums.
This is a customized Russ Hamm # 17 lock along with a 2 piece trigger guard.
Pierced with 14k Gold rivets & inlays etc.
You can see the 14k hallmark on the dragon.
Even the nut has a gold top added and the top jaw screw has an inlaid band of gold.
The trigger guard is pierced with gold and even the sides and ends are inlaid.
No idea how deep the side inlays go.
There is an eagle on the cock, leaves on the jaws, maybe a vulture & trusty hunting dog on the side plate along with some foliage.
The frizzen has the dragon & leaves.
This is truly one of a kind!

You know Au is heavy like Pb, maybe Pletch needs to time that one to see how adding weight to the moving parts affects ignition.

I don't know if he ever did test the aluminum/titanium concepts.

Nice Jewelry, better than a fancy watch.

You didn't mention who did the customization?

This came to me through an estate.  I don't know who actually did the work.

I agree.  The gold is worth more than the lock and guard.

Jimmy........Sorry, but it would be a tragedy to even try to match that lock with Jerry's
barrel.  Not in the same league.........Don

Peterson Publishing printed a book many moons ago, about a hermit/mountainman that mined for gold along "the river of no return" in Idaho. He built oddball muzzleloaders, with fittings very much like the ones you have. The gold ornamentation was made from gold he panned from the river.  I don't think I would start melting this stuff down quite yet, it may have collectors value beyond the gold content. The purity of the gold might give you an insight into if it was unrefined gold, or not.

Hi Hungry Horse,
This has no connection with Sylvan Hart.  His work was much different and much better.  This lock and trigger guard make me think of a fully chromed 1970s GTO with furry dashboard, wheel, and dice hanging from the mirror.  But not as good.

Some how that lock and trigger guard bring to mind Tammy Baker's makeup  ::)
Perhaps you could use it on a "steam punk" blunderbuss.
