Try one, try the other. If using a water based lube and this is strickly for target shooting, I'd start at 55 and go from there, 5 gr. at a time.  My .40 loves 55gr. 2F with patched RB and a water based lube. If using a slippery oil lube, it needs 65gr. 3F and 75gr. 2F.
Much (it all) depends on your load combinations and lube.
The only way to find out, is to try it. It may not like 2f at all, or it might shoot 1/2 group sizes for you making you wonder why you didn't switch years ago.
Your gun will tell you how much to use.

I use to shoot a load of 60grns of 3F.  When I couldn't find 3F I'd buy 2F.  I used them the same with 60grns and really didn't notice any difference.  Of course if you shoot like me then you'd be satisfied with anything, ugh.   :-[

Don't short change yourself Hansi - with a water based lube, as I noted, I can use 55gr. 2F - but, 55gr. 3F is my normal load when I have 3F powder to burn.  With that water-based lube and those normal .022"(compressed) patches, both powders, same load shoot virtually the same. It is when I switch to a slippery lube, that the powder charges have to vary to maintain accuracy.  This is all part of the game- shooting to find out what works, what doesn't.

I'm looking at a 20 ga. smooth bore. The owner shoots 3f I normally use 2f.
I want to try to keep the piece preforming the way he says it does.
Another dumb question. Historically speaking I know there wasn't
the different grains we have. Would 55 gr. work on deer ?
