double based front sight rifle
« on: December 08, 2014, 05:23:35 PM »
Are there any makers or geographical areas that have a double based, double inlet front sight as a characteristic?

I saw a superb contemporary flint pistol last week with a double base front sight.
The maker is Mike Cox who lives here in WV.

Thanks Bob.
I posted this in the antique collecting section as the rifle in question is an original percussified. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a few Jamestown NC rifles that have the double based front sight and have seen quite a few others with the same setup.  As far as I know, this is a common feature on rifles made there. I once owned a rifle that had a triple based front sight, but have no idea where it was made.

This was a feature found on many Jamestown School rifles.  I would say that I have seen the double based front site on around 70% of all Jamestown Rifles.  This feature and the long, rounded, three screw barrel tang are often the easiest way to identify a rifle from this school.

Over the years, I have seen a few Appalachian School or Tennessee Rifles that had a double brass dovetailed front site.  I assume the maker had seen a Jamestown Rifle and liked that feature.

Thanks guys. That makes my guess a little more solid.  I thought it may be an Anderson Lamb my friend was telling me about. I appreciate the responses.

I also owned that same rifle and SC seems the most likely area of origin.

Philip Gillespie made a few rifles with double front sight bases and like Michael said he or his customer's probably saw these used on Jamestown NC rifles and decided to try them out.

I had a 32 caliber fullstock rifle made by Bob Barlow in Bristol VA that had a doube front sight base.  It was late made in the 80's rifle.
He must have saw the double base on earlier rifles.  If I see him I will ask where he got the idea to use a front site with double bases.  Last I heard his health was failing him real bad.

I have a circa 1850 rifle that I attribute to up-state SC with a double dovetail front sight. There is nothing on the rifle that suggests a Jamestown influence o the unknown maker.

WHAT is the advantage of the double based front sight? Elegant looks maybe
and labor intensive no doubt.
