Mike Brooks Fowler
« on: December 26, 2014, 10:23:10 PM »
Finally got a pretty day so could shoot my Mike Brooks Fowler.
Set up my target and fired 5 shots at it.  All 62 caliber balls were in a 5 inch circle at the bulls eye.  For me that is good.  For those who shoot a lot of flintlocks I am sure it could be better. This was at 50 yards. I will shoot more and try and get a better followup.
The sights are perfect for my eyes. Front sight shows up good in light and rear sight is far enough forward that my old eyes see the picture good.
The fowler fires fast with about 5 grains of primer 4F in the pan.  The stock fits me like a glove. The Fowler is long and Lean.  Light weight I guess you could call it.
Can not wait till spring and give it a try with 4 0 buckshot on a Turkey.
Mike made one that is for sure a keeper for me. Great work Mike.

I don't have any pictures of the fowler.  I saved the ones Mike had on this forum but when trying to view them they would not show up.  Must been some security code in them.
Mike might see this thread and add them.  If not I will try and get a couple on here.

I would try no. 2's or 4's for Turkey instead of No.4 buckshot.

Nothing is hard if you have the right equipment and know how to use it.  OR have friends who have both.

The molds I have say 4-Buck on them.   I have a bag of 7 1/2 shot I can use. I counted about 20-22 of the number 4 in a measure that measures 85 grain of 2F black powder.  I thought that would do the trick on a turkey.   Will pattern it before going into the woods.

Check your game laws as to max shot size.  Most states have a #2 or #4 shot size as max, not buckshot.  Hard premium shot will give better performance than cheap bargain types usually.  Penetrate better and drag in less feathers.  Good luck this spring.

Finer shot usually patterns much better than buckshot.

Not to tell an "Old Turkey" how to fly, BUT remember a head or neck shot is best to down a turkey.
Those big old feathers on the body will not let most shot in, so a body shot is not a definite kill.
So, #4,5,or 6 into the neck and head will do most damage, and quick kill.
Just a suggestion from one "Old Buzzard" to another.
Happy New Year!
