Got another rifle yesterday
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:38:34 PM »
I got this one in yesterday and removed an ugly mount that sat on top of it and added factory sights that I had on hand. Nothing fancy as far as wood stain goes! I dont know what the heck CVA thought when they stained them that ugly orange SKS color. Overall, its a real clean rifle without a whole lot of dings/dents. Some one took it to a pro and had the nose cap drilled and a steel sling stud/nut added for a front swivel and they also did the rear sling stud as well. Its real nice to have a proper sling mount added.

I MUST check the twist on this one! I shot this today with the horribly crude factory sights at 50 yards and using the fence line as my rest. Bore loads smooth and fairly easy even with the .020" patch.

80gr Goex 2fg
.490" round ball
.020" patches Lubed with Birchwood Casey Muzzle magic cleaner.

ugly is an understatement LOL. Not bad at all for just getting the rifle yesterday. I was extremely pleased with that group. About to clean it now and see what I have for a twist.

I remember back in the early 80's when CVA brought out their "Hawken" it had a 1 inch barrel and a 1/66 twist and the rear sight was farther out.  Although they said St. Louis Hawken on the box mine said just "Hawken" on the barrel.  The late 80's CVA had St. Louis Hawken stamped on the barrel.  and it had a 15/16ths inch barrel and a 1/48 inch twist.  I have one of the 1 inch models here I've been working on the stock by making a Pewter nose cap and pewter wedge escutcheons.  Need to finish her up and try that barrel out.

Well yesterday she got stripped, lightly sanded, rubbed down with a scotch brite pad and then stained. I used 3 coats LMF nut brown and 2 light coats of dixie gun works stain. Its made for a beautiful color thats not red and not brown. Like a nice darkish rich honey color. Lots of figure in the beechwood on this one.

I got permalyn on it now, but that takes time to dry and set properly before I buff it down and add more coats.

This one is getting a brand new 1:66 twist .50cal browned barrel on it that I had left over from a previous project.

Still have the lock to polish and the triggers.
