I've had this horn for quite a while and could never decide what to do with it. I was such a beautiful white horn but it had very little mass in the tip. I turned a horn tip and an antler collar and pinned them on with ivory pins. Since I couldn't do any deep engrailing, I opted to do some low relief carving where the engrailing would be. On the outside curve I used, as a model, an engraving by Albrecht Durer (1471- 1528) entitled "The Sea Monster." I've been wanting to do this image for quite some time but didn't have either a suitable horn or the skills necessary to execute it.
On the inside curve I did a mermaid with a ribbon for the owners name. The spout plug is an ebony fiddle peg, turned down to fit and the base plug is figured maple inlaid with .999 fine silver. It has a turned horn finial.
What can I say? I like to make fancy horns
