Chisel Rack
« on: March 09, 2015, 03:14:17 AM »
This weekend I put together a new rack for my carving chisels.  The rack is made of red oak and has room for 47 tools.  This rack can either be attached to the wall or set on the work bench.  The neat feature of this rack is the slant board in the back that supports the back row of chisels.  Because o being slanted, another nice feature is that the stand does not collect chips.  I need to put some finish on this rack to complete it.  I also want to try and make a similar rack for my rasps and files.  It will end up being taller, not as wide but will require larger diameter PVC tubing.

The first photo shows the completed rack loaded with chisels and gouges.

This next photo shows the 2 boards that make up the chisel support.  The large holes are 1 1/8" diameter.  The smaller holes were drilled with a spade or paddle bit that I ground down to provide a slight interference fit with the 1/2" PVC tubing.

Photo number 3 shows the board ripped down the center of the 1 1/8" holes.

This photo shows the 3" long pieces of PVC tube driven into the smaller holes.

You have to look hard but in this final photo you can see the slant board behind and underneath the scalloped boards.

Clever, Dave. Very clever. I had to look more than once.

Really a good design, I will make one up today. I can't wait to see your file/rasp rack, I have tried lots of ideas over the years but have never liked a one. I just have them laid out on a separate low table at the end of the bench along with half a doz scrapers..

Thanks for renewing the pictures - seems to be an easy task.  Do wish all my chisels had the same style/size handles as my carving chisels, but can always make two of these.
