How About A 200 Yard Round Ball Match?

The first post says:

When I say informal I'm thinking of a type of target all of us could most likely come up with, that being the 22" x 28" poster board, or the same size in cardboard.  We could glue (or spray paint) a 12" x 12" square black bullseye in the center and make its value 3 points, while giving anything out or not touching the bullseye and yet touching on the poster board or card board the value of 1 point. 

And your last one says:

Bullseye - 5 Points
Inner - 3 Points
Outer - 1 Point

I'm lost on what the five point bulls eye is.  Is there another scoring ring (square) within the 12" square?

We had a change early on and the target should look like this...  However, you can use your own color schemes for the scoring areas of what you can see best.  I'll probably just stay with these colors.



The overall target is 22" x 28"

Outer - White area - "Outside" of Black 12" x 12" Center - 1 Point

Center -  Black 12" x 12" - "Outside" of White Bullseye  - 3 Points

Bullseye -  White 5" x 5" - "Inside" Black Center - Point Value 5 points

Ball hole must be "half in" to get the next highest scoring area point value.

EXAMPLE OF SCORING:

Reading the target below from left to right;

The Red Dot = 5 points as it is 1/2 in the higher scoring value of the Bullseye.

The Blue Dot = 5 points as it is in the Bullseye completely.

The Yellow Dot = 3 points as it is "not" half in the Bullseye - but rather over half
in the Center.

The next Yellow Dot = 3 points as it is mostly in the black Center.

The Red Dot = 1 point as it is clearly in the white Outer.

Ok, told my boss today that I would like to take next week off so I can shoot my muzzleloading rifle out to 200 yards for our round ball match here.  He said he'd ok it since I'll probably need the time to rest up after walking up and down the range that far.  (He forgets I have a spotting scope) hehehehe!!!

Yes, I'm going to take a week's vacation and hopefully spend it at the local Range just shooting and relaxing.  That's the plan any way until my wife finds out I'm on vacation...

Dang,  shooting that well at 200 yards is wishful thinking, on my part.

If y'all expect to shoot that well, I might as well save powder and lead for something I can hope to hit.

By the way, my vacation has been changed.  I actually changed it myself because all of next week is suppose to rain, (not that I'm complaining.)  Lord knows we've needed a good wet year for the last 6 to 7 years out here where I live.  I'll just wait for a better day to shoot my 10 shots for this match.  There's still 25 days left in June.  Bound to be one decent one?  Maybe?

How does everyone feel about extending our deadline for this match?  I only suggest it because this has been one wet Spring (something we're not use to where I live), and I have to admit I have not had the time or have been able to catch a decent weather day - to date when I've been off, to get a chance to shoot this match.

Would everyone be agreeable to extent this challenge through the end of August?

I knew the 2" wide black Duct Tape and those large Foresty maps would come in handy sometime - not only for patterning but for these targets as well. A single map makes 2 of these, but 2 of them are needed for patterning to get a good sized sheet of paper.  Check with your local Forestry office or become friends with a Forestry employee. The maps that are out of date are merely thrown away - a waste of large sheets of white paper - only printed on one side.  As well, they do come in handy for hunting, however logging blocks aren't up to date, of course.

I like the idea of the map usage for targets Daryl.  Good use of putting new life into something that would otherwise be discarded.  I use the old monthly advertising posters from where I work.  Like the maps, they are only printed on one side and I can cut them down to make these targets.

I never thought about using black duct tape.  I like that idea as well!

It has been extended through the end of August.  This is the type of match (IMHO) that a person needs a bit more time with, as the shooter's need to get their range of windage and elevation - then make a run at the record shots.

I just found this thread and am  interested in participating.  I have not read thnrough all 7 pages olf discussion so I am not up on the final rules.  Was ikt decided to use the 22 X 28 square with the 12 X 12 black and a 6 X 6 center?  Also, was it finalized that five shots would be taken offhand and five shots from any other position of the shooter's choice?  About the scoring, in your early note you said that any shot touching a higher scoring ring would be given the higher score.  Normally in scoring black powder matches, the bullet has to be over half in the higher ring before getting the higher score.  In other words, the ring in which the greater part of the bullet hole lies decides the score.  Will we be using this scoring method or the one first proposed which is the method used for modern smokeless powder matches?  Finally, will our targets be mailed in or will pictures of the target be posted on this forum for final scoring.  Oh, is there any restriction on what calibers can  be used?

Oops, made my targets an inch small all round and centre and inch too small as well.  Oh well.  We've discussed getting out to shoot his match, but so far, it hasn't happened.  Doesn't like like we'll get it done before Hefley now - I don't have any powder left but Taylor does .

We did have some changes.  The deadline was extended (I updated the quote above) to August 31st.

Scoring is half or better for higher point value.

If everyone would like, we could extend the August 31 deadline out to October 31st?  Daryl might have some powder by then.....

Well, that was a humbling experience.  All I can say is, thank goodness the target was big enough to contain all the shots.  My two best shots were offhand - go figure.  Daryl elected to disqualify his target because he ran out of FFg fuel for the beast and used FFFg instead.  I forgot to bring his powder...oops!  He
'll shoot his target for score tomorrow with the proper charge and take whatever he gets.

My load was .490 cast pure lead ball, 120 grains FFFg GOEX, .023" denim precut circular patch lubed with WW Antigreeze, Murphy's, Neats Foot Oil concoction.  I shot my .50 calibre Mark Silver design Chambers Virginia.  The rifle weighs 10 pounds even.  Thanks Jim and Barbie for a great rifle.  We had some interesting wind changes and poring rain through some of the shooting...just like hunting.  For the rest position, we used sitting with cross sticks...hope that was allowed.  If not, let us know and we'll do it differently.

Check out the before and after shots of Daryl and his 14 bore rifle.  I wonder why his shoulder and back is screwed.

Oh yeah...my score was 20/50.  Offhand 11, sitting 9.

I've got to give this another try.  I've been shamed into using my Dickert Flintlock now since Taylor used his flinter.  Great job by the way!

X-Sticks wasn't part of it, but lets let it stand as I'd kind'a like to see what I could do with 5 shots using them as well.

WOW Daryl, now that's some recoil!  I thought I felt the ground shift a bit down here in Nebraska when I was at the Range earlier.  Now I know why!

Taylor, the pictures of you holding your shot target I believe is an excellent view of what was obtainable back in the days of "Flintlock" only rifles.  As I look over my book, (British Military Flintlock Rifles 1740-1840) pages 91, 171, 172, (especially page 172), you would have had no problem at all being put in a, Rifle (Sharpshooter) unit and being issued a Baker Rifle.
